This wednesday we will be playing on our new server which will either be running R8 PB faked off or R10 with the client update that lets us not have to do weird shit to show up on the server browser. Hopefully we will have the update which is supposed to come with a surprise and it will be good enough we can now start recommending this game to others.

Fingers crossed.

Also an answer to a burning question:

BC2 uses server-side hit detection
Quote:The good part about letting the server handle most of the computations is that those computations are less likely to be spoofed by an unsavory client.

The bad part is that these computations aren't shared among the clients, putting a lot more load on server resources.

If server owners (renters) are noticing bad hit registration - I mean cronicly bad hit registration - on the servers they're renting ask the GSP how many instances of the game are running on 'your' box.

I'd be very suprised if you even got an answer, and I'd be even more surprised if the answer you get is the truth.

GSPs have a lot of overhead. Those big pipes to the internet don't grow on trees. I fully understand they need to make money. They do that by cramming as many games as they can get away with on as few machines as they can get away with.

The question is: How many BFBC2 games can run - and run well - on one box?

As patches come, optimizations are done, on both server and client software it might get better. Everyone is screaming at DICE to fix the blinkin' game. Maybe DICE can't 'fix' something they don't have any control over.... don't know... just thinking out loud.

Since hit reg is handled by the servers - seems like the problem might be on the servers. lol

I don't have problems with hit reg. None of our guys do when we're playing on our own server. Our GSP isn't one of the giant companies, so it's in their interest to keep everybody really happy. So far, so good.

If you're having bad juju with hit reg, try playing on another server. Try playing at off peak times for your area. Try to find out when the servers are under the most load and play somewhere else where the load might be lighter.

This is why NFO servers have better hit detection than GameServers.

That's what I've been saying all along, either GS has A) Shitty hardware, or B) oversubscribed boxes

Also;

Quote:The good part about letting the server handle most of the computations is that those computations are less likely to be spoofed by an unsavory client.

Whoever made that statement is captain obvious-fucking-obvious.

That lesson was learned *very* publicly back in the days when you could TK every player inside a town in Diablo online, at once, because in-town spell-casting blocking was done client side, not server side.

Also, there are a number of new commands upcoming via Guardian for our admins, namely the ability to slay people and force a teamswap on a person.

The commands are already in R9, but both servers are on R8 right now, so it's a moot point.

It’s great this month.

It will probably be great for one more after.

But we do have an insanely expensive server to maintain. It is clear that to play this game at all, you need an expensive server or it sucks badly. If we can’t find a steady source of funding, this server is closing in on a thousand dollars a year to run.

It may be fun for a little while, but I don’t think we can support this game for much longer without broad community support (money).

We have enough in the kitty for one more month after this current one.

Ad money goes to gameservers.com (yes, no caff?), which is just whatever is left of our TF2 players. So does the paypal link.

As far as I know, this is funded by us giving money to surf, and surf paying for it (he has paid for almost all of it, by himself).

Remember, this is at best a few members trying to splinter out and try and new game. Half of the mods and leadership haven't made an effort to buy the game or support the title, even when it was $20. There just isn't much interest besides a few of us, and it simply isn’t sustainable.

Pubstomping in mumble was the best time I have had gaming since...I don't know, it's been a while. I don't know if we are just better than the average player, but we could pretty much roll a server with just 5-6 of us. Diglett, Kirby, Maxon, Duck, Tim, Mission, Zane (list goes on and on) would just hop on and rolllllllll some poor server with an AWFUL name and logo (drawn in MS Paint FTW). If you have never pubstomped with us, you are missing out.
