Duck, would this be a good SLI motherboard or would I better off getting another.

And apparently Tom's hardware did a $1500 build as well as a $4500 build. Though I would save more than a few fat ones and go with a cheaper case for the $4500 one.

edit: Don't just buy the parts, read everything if you want to learn something about build. Especially since they recommend against some of the parts they used. Just use these more for reference than anything else.

2 9800's.

Okay, so Rio tells me it would be a waste to SLI 2 9800's. Y/N?

Umm, depends on what games you're playing, but almost certainly a waste.

Rebooting this thread. You have: $1,000, HDD, monitor, keyboard, mouse, whatever else is salvageable from a dell inspiron (disk drives?). You need: amazing computer, OS, maybe a monitor that isn't a POS.

Also cleaning out OP for new rigs if anyone wants to try their hand at one.

Possible PyroZombie build I threw together:

Case: COOLER MASTER HAF 922 Price: $99.98
Hard drive: Western Digital Caviar Black 750GB Price: $79.99
Power supply and DVD reader/writer/burner: OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W and some Asus disk reader Price: $94.98
Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws Series 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) x2 Price: $219.98 ($109.99 each)
Everything else: AMD Phenom II X4 955 Black Edition Deneb 3.2GHz, ASUS M4A79XTD EVO MoBo, SAPPHIRE  Radeon HD 5770 video card Price: $418.97

Total: $913.90

Of course, this is just a rough list. I assumed 750GB would be plenty for storage, and the 8GB RAM is definitely overkill. The video card seemed okay, judging from the reviews.

that doesn't seem like a lot. Are you sure that is better?

What doesn't seem like a lot? Also, better than what?

Also, here's Windows 7 for $99.99

Never mind, it's apparently 20 times stronger then my sources

my sources are tell me to ask you about a 500 gb hard-drive, and is that case really that good?

And about the DVD thing, I don't really watch movies on the computer, I just really watch youtube. Can we get rid of that or am I being completely stupid?

and thanks for the list.

A 500GB drive costs $10 less than a 750GB drive. The 750GB drive is a much better deal.

The DVD thing is useful. You never know when you might want to watch a movie or play/install a game from a CD, or maybe rip or burn some music. It's standard equipment on any computer, so no reason not to get it.

As far as the case is concerned, I can vouch for the Cooler Master HAF series. This is my case, which is a larger version of the one I linked you. Both have great cooling, sturdy construction, and a tough, military look. If you don't like how it looks or want something bigger, smaller, or priced differently, there are a ton of options available.

Thank you Didzo for putting the effort into helping a bro out, it is much appreciated. This is the case I use and I love it (fantastic tool-less design), but Didzo's very well may be better, and I will default to his list for everything else. I haven't kept up with hardware as of late, but the rig he suggested will definitely perform better than what you were intending to buy by leaps and bounds

That is basically my rig and it awesome. Swap out the mobo though. I have that mobo and it has trouble handling RAM that fast. I think I have the same RAM and it is underclocked. Get one of the mobos with the new AMD chipsets.

I think the jist of it is that Sapphire owns about two times harder than other ATI manufacturers.

My RAM was underclocked as well with that mobo, but it took me 10 minutes to both Google the problem and go into Bios and manually change the timings and voltage... Which you could do yourself as well.

Not that it caused any noticeable increase in performance.

Then you are lucky, from what I gathered you have to OC the chipsets to get certain RAM at speed with that board. I get blue screens or failure to boot if I change anything. The new chipset mobOs are not that much more and it is well worth the cash to lower bottleneck issues.
