Does somebody know of a good and free virus scanner and remover? i just got some viruses, again.
Gah! im hearing random ad's. I powered my comp down for now till i find a good remover. Help plz.
Pretty sure we've had five or so of these threads before.

Clamwin is great. Doesn't do active scanning, but you can just schedule it to run every night or whenever.

Malwarebytes Antimalware is pretty good for adware/malware/whatever.

Both do removal. You have to check the option in clamwin to remove upon detection or whatever.

AVG does active scanning, but if you ask me it's a little bloated (I feel that way about any software that offers to install a toolbar). You could easily try both and see what you like better.
idk i dont install toolbars and it runs fine on my P4 so...
Malware bytes is amazing,

Also spybot search and destroy is good too, if only because it'll run pre-full start up incase they try to hide themselves in running processes.
Pirate norton?

[/quote]If you use the whole suite of software, I agree. But if you strip it down to just antivirus protection, its pretty good without being a system hog or causing compatibility/reliability issues (like I've had with AVG Free and McAffee). Symantec AV corporate is the one to look for, if you go this route, but if you just buy the basic Norton Antivirus online its like $15.

Also, I use Spybot S&D for my anti-spyware needs: http://www.safer-networking.org/ It's more geared towards the advanced user though, the interface is not very intuitive. It will detect and remove spyware for free, however.
AVG and Adaware or Spybot S&D.  AVG isn't bad at all even in terms of resources.

I do software development, and AVG would regularly lock up a core of my CPU scanning stuff that didn't need to be rescanned while I was trying to work. Probably some freak coincidence between my industrial automation IDE and AVG but definitely enough to turn me off of it.
