So ever since around when the Spy-Sniper update was released, my in-game Steam community overlay thing doesn't run with most of my games. At first I thought it wouldn't run only on Source games/mods, but it also doesn't come up when I play Far Cry 2, World of Goo, and some other stuff. The only games I have that it runs on are Half-life 1 (not Source), Audiosurf, Everyday Shooter, and Lumines. Also now whenever I alt-tab out of TF2 in order to check Steam messages, my screen goes black until I alt-tab back to the game. It never did that before I had this problem.

I checked Steam support and I'm not running any of the apps that are known to interfere with it. The Steam forums are worthless. I tried deleting everything in my Steam folder except steam.exe and the SteamApps folder and let it redownload all the system files, but that didn't fix it. The only other thing I could think of is completely reinstalling Steam, but I'd rather exhaust any other possible option before I have to redownload 30GB of games. Halpz pleez?
Well you're in luck because the steam overlay crashes my games. :\
Is your firewall blocking it from accessing the internet?

Every time steam updates it does that to me.

Yeah, Zone Alarm did that to me. I have to re-add it every update.

The overlay still works perfectly fine when I play Audiosurf or Half-life 1. I would think that a firewall would always block it from running, not only when I play certain games.

You think wrong. I recently downloaded a mod, and I had to give permission to hl2.exe all over again, even though I had given hl2.exe permission for TF2 and the ilk.
