Saw a post on redit that some website was doing this so I thought we could have our own little discussion, and perhaps a poll at the end, similar to the personal top ten thread, except only encompassing Jan 2000 - Dec 2009.

Rules Are Simple:

1) No Franchises or Packs - "The Orange Box" does not count but Portal, TF2, or HL2 would; Similarly "God Of War" would not encompass all of its games (which have all been in the last 10 years)

2) Give a brief reason why

3) You can write in as many as you want, but after the thread has pittered out I'll go back and check the discussion and see what to put up on a vote.

4) Specify a platform if a game is multi-platform

There's a lot of ground to cover, so don't think of the last 3 - 4 years as having all of the best games of the whole ten. And while you can make this entirely personal, try to think in broader terms Wink

Here are some of mine (subject to edits later)

Mother 3 (GBA) - Exemplifies what a JRPG should be, an amazingly heart wrenching story wrapped in generally simplistic graphics and gameplay. I think this one reminds all of us that you don't need flashy cutscenes and pretty 3-D bloom to tell an amazing story.

Deus Ex (PC) - This took FPS storytelling to the next level, its non-linear nature and story telling paved the way for many games to follow and proved that an FPS game could be more than a Quake run-and-gun frag fest.

Half-Life 2 (PC) - Picks up the greatness of a good FPS narrative where Deus Ex left off, excellent pacing, characters you actually give a damn about, and of course, the gravity gun. Not even taking into account the slew of mods you get with the game, the single player alone deserves mention.

Deus Ex (PC) - amazing story, and other stuff caff said.

Persona 3 FES (PS2) - also has an awesome story...a JRPG that didn't make me feel like I was grinding (except for The Answer, and I also played on easy Tongue). Also Aegis owns. :V

Knights of the Old Republic
PC
The Best Star Wars Game EVER. A good RPG which made you really feel like you were in the Star Wars Universe. Interesting Characters (I <3 you, HK47), Fun gameplay and one of the best Star Wars story lines ever. I've replayed this one quite a bit.

Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney -- Trials And Tribulations
DS
I love adventure games and this series stole my heart from the get go. Loveable characters, quite a good (if over the top) story line and the gameplay made me smile and shout quite a few times. I chose the third chapter because it was the most emotional of the three and also had my favourite character: Godot. I've had him as my avatar for a very long time.

Half Life 2
PC
This needs no explanation

Deus Ex
PC
RPG and FPS combined to be better than the sum of its parts.
Those are three off the top of my head... Probably many more but I can't think of them right now.

Unlike Luin? ;D
Alrighty... I'm just gonna go and do... 5 for now.
Phoenix Wright Trials and Tribulations (DS)- This game is, simply put, fabulously written. I loved the characters, Loved the twists, and still quote it sometimes. (All men wear masks, either on their faces or over their hearts). Also, it was one of the only games to make me feel extremely sad at the end.

Half-Life 2- Definitely one of the more fun FPS experiences I've ever had in single player. Great gameplay, a blast to play.

Metal Gear Solid 3 (PS2)- One of those games that has an awesome combination of gameplay and story-telling. Lots of memorable moments in boss fights, great story that almost made me cry in the end.

Tales of the Vesperia (360)- Probably my candidate for favourite RPG this generation so far. Long storyline with an addictive battle system (I managed to get in something like 60 hours within the first 2 weeks of owning the game) and loads of stuff to do. Active battle system makes you rely on skill as well as strategy to win battles.

Smash Bros. Brawl (wii)- One of the most fun party games to play. Good list of characters that only gets better with modding, AMAZING Soundtrack with lots of variety, and tons of unlockables have kept me coming back to it over and over again.
Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines: My personal favorite RPG of all time.  The combat to not combat ratio got a bit crazy near the end but everything else was awesome.

Pathologic: A total mindfuck of a game, very surreal, and doesn't really fit into any genre.  Still totally awesome.

STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl: The most intense shooter I've ever played.  It's everything Far Cry 2 and Fallout 3 tried to be.

The Witcher: I shouldn't put this here, since I haven't finished it, but what I've played is super awesome and everyone should play it.
Half-Life 2. This was one of the few games to really grab me and not let go until it had had its way with me. In fact I can't think of any others that I couldn't stop thinking about, or any others that I still respect highly.

Oh wait, maybe one more.

Jedi Knight - Dark Forces II. The old one from 19-something. SO MUCH TIME was spent on this game but not because it was hard or time consuming; it was just fucking AMAZING. It was the first game I actually played online with others; I braved shitty ass dial-up in the middle of no-where, Canada to play this with folks and still feel all warm and fuzzy inside about it.

Also Crystal and I murdered many of those little worker aliens. And one time I found this secret room, completely by accident, that was full of every droid in the game doing some kind of complicated dance. There was a sea of like 100 or more of them, and as I walked among them, disturbing their pattern, they in turn disturbed all the others. The entire time I was in this room I was just sputtering "WHA-.... WHAT THE FUCK? WHAT? THE? FUCK?"

The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64)
Not only is it my favorite game of the decade but it's also my favorite of all time. By far the darkest and most bizarre of the Zelda franchise. I spent so many hours playing this game. Trying to get all the masks and just running around doing all the side quests and what not. This was the first game that started my goal of 100% every Zelda game I can get my hands on.

Garry's Mod (PC)
It's Garry's Mod. It's all the fun of doing the most random stupid shit you can think of.

Metroid Prime 2: Echoes (GC)
Playing this game for the first time blew me away. I've always had a soft spot for old-school adventure FPS's (ex: Unreal) This game had great environments to explore, the boss battles were interesting and challenging and the desolation of the environment felt just right with how the story was written. I also love that the game was stupidly hard but not impossible.
Demon's Souls (PS3)
I actually have a sick love affair with the PS1 King's Field games and Demon's Souls shucks off almost all the icky unplayable parts of that series. It's atmospheric and lonely, and my first playthrough I was super tense and sometimes slightly sweaty everytime I went to a new area.

I am a little confused why it was hyped as super hard 'cause retro NES stuff is harder than DS. Almost every death I had was my fault for doing something retarded.

Team Fortress 2
I'm not normally into multiplayer games, especially FPS. But I've played TF2 for more than 200 hours and it's still pretty fun. And I'm still pretty bad Sad

Final Fantasy IX
It's not my favorite FF, but one the whole it's one of the best. One of the prettiest games on PS1, and probably the best soundtrack of the whole series, this game had a lot of style. Also, this and Vagrant Story were some of the first games Square really did a fantastic localization with.

Edit: And +1 for correct opinions.

Edit 2: +1 for Maxon for the same reason.
This is pretty tough for me.  Rarely do games hit me and stick for long lengths of time.  I have many interests and while a game might've been awesome a few years ago, it's doubtful I'd go back to it now, even if I loved it.

STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl (PC) - Like Eschatos, I love this game.  It was intense, atmospheric, and even if it was a very buggy game, it was still an amazing game to play.  A game that could keep a person playing even with it's problems is certainly an awesome game.  Not too mention it's a highly customizable game and there have been some impressive mods that you don't see happen to many games such as being able to change almost everything and were able to bring about changes that affected future expansions.  I put in HOURS and HOURS into this game.  Way more than I did with Fallout 3 and all the expansions.

Star Wars Galaxies (PC) - Yes, compared to most any other MMO out there right now, this game is pitiful with less than 100k people playing across the servers that were just recently cut in half.  I actually just got back into playing the game after a year and though it's a shell of its former self, but at one time it was just such a fun game.  It came out before WoW and for awhile it had some great features.  Multiple mounts and rides, a combat system different and more interesting than the usual MMO's, player cities which is the best feature for an MMO ever, though has never been repeated, and it was challenging and had a great group atmosphere.  Then SOE caved into the bitchers who all wanted to be Jedi...in a universe where there were very little, but because it was Star Wars, it was REQUIRED to have Jedi's.  All downhill from there.  But for a time it was great and no MMO since then has been better to me.

Banjo-Tooie (N64) - Though I haven't been a big platformer gamer with the games in the last two generations, the Nintendo 64 was the best system for it and I absolutely loved the Banjo-Tooie.  It was everything BK had and more.  More places, more to explore, more things to learn, more to do.  It is easily one of my favorite platfomer games ever and has me wanting a really sequel to it that doesn't involve vehicles lol

I can probably come up with a few more, but I'm having trouble really digging into the games that really hit me hard at the moment.

I remember being in the beta for this and it being pretty damn good, SOE raped the piss out of it though, like all of their MMOs

I started in around the start of it.  Back in my hometown we had about a good half dozen people playing it and even had a few LAN parties with it.  Back then, we didn't even have creature mounts and had to make runs to the Krayt Graveyard since there weren't even towns with shuttles by there yet.  Mmm...Good times putting my guy on auto-run as he would make the run to there lol  You can actually spot the exact moment things got bad when they started to create ways for people to get jedi rather than it being mostly random.  Holocrons came out and then you could start choosing proffessions to master, then it was creating a way for people to become force sensitive, then the combat changes came...then just worse and worse till they LITERALLY made it a new game.  They made new classes, combat was done differently, all new starting quests...Sorry if that was long winded.  I was hooked to this game for a good two years I think lol
I say Ha-

NO! NO WE MUST VOTE MADBALLS

MASTER COMMANDS US.

Shut up addicted me.

anyway i vote:

HL2 (PC): Obvious choice for everyone

MW2 (360): Besides super ragers on multiplayer and the super fucking annoying Brazil level it's got a lot of fun gameplay and fairly intense. Also I <3 Plot Twists

I love you both so hard.

Anyways, for me I'd guess I'd have to pick...hmm...crap. You guys already picked all the good ones! Sad

Hoooo boy, tough one.

Metal Gear Solid 3 (PS2) is very high on my list.  This is exactly what 3rd person action/stealth should be.  Multiple ways to complete most objectives, interactive management of stamina, health, etc.  Good amount of humor and easter eggs, good replay value, and it caters to every gameplay style.  Do you want to sneak and never be seen?  Do you wanna speed run?  Do you wanna go out guns blazing?  It's all open.  Toss in a few silly seeking missions (frogs, collect all animals, etc) and you've got a well built game.

HL2 - enough said, really.  Graphics were top notch for 04, good story, good length, interesting puzzles and situations for an FPS, and a huge modding platform.

God of War 2 (PS2) - probably not top of my list but well worth mentioning.  Great example of what an action game should be.  Action sequences broken up with puzzle sequences, the interactive events are always pleasing to watch, the unique bosses don't use the same reppetitive models, and the hard modes are REALLY hard.  Has a lot of replay value for its challenge and different choices you can make when upgrading items and choosing what to use.  Also great graphics for PS2.

I'm sure I'll think of more later.  Also, Karth, post your list anyway Tongue  Always good to see the why, plus thats one more vote for it Tongue
