OK I've been looking up methods. Word is I should swap out my factory applied for the arctic 5 I got, what method is best?
Wow this literally says to just put a grain of rice size dot in the middle and stick on the heat sink.

Make sure you clean both side VERY VERY well.
Use lots of 99.9% alcohol and cotton swabs, replacing the swab often.

I personally use the old-skool spread a grain of rice over using a blue razor blade... but thats just me.
Hmm time to buy alcohol and cotton swabs....and maybe a razor blade.
i spread mine with the plastic container from something.

Enjoy your suffocation/heavy metal poisoning.
You don't have alcohol or cotton swabs?

I practically live on that pair!

And the best way to apply it is by having two good looking girls rubbing it all over, in my opinion.

Last time I did it I actually used a cheap paint brush you can get at a hobby store...
I followed this method... How do you apply Artic Silver 5 ? My processor i7 920 and heatsink Zalman 9900 avgs at about 38 C when I have clean dustfilters.

Heavy Metal Poisoning - Styx
Just a pea (or half-pea, depends I guess) sized bit of the thermal compound in the center will do you. EDIT: Yeah, War's video is pretty good.

Anyone know how often it needs to be cleaned & replaced? I haven't replaced mine in six months or so.

I rarely if ever replace mine, depends on the quality of the paste, how well you applied it

I'd go on an 'as needed' basis if you ever notice your CPU heat starting to spike
Thanks for the help guys but I just read that changing out the thermal grease from stock voids the warranty (as does using a non-stock cooler) so I am sticking with stock grease for now until I know everything works and there are no manufacturer defects. If I have problems in the future I'll use this thread and swap it out.

A little overkill.

All you need is just a card to get the stuff up (it's not like glue it'll come right off), then when laying down put a very small dot of the stuff on the CPU and evenly spread it out on top of the CPU.  All done.
