So guys.

I am abandoning pl_awesome for now, I mean, I really don't like it.  Fear not, as I have a new map in the works.  I will actually make an effort to make cleanest brushes possible, good opti, etc.

Now now, what could this map be?

ctf_classy (working title)

The idea, inspired by a map Caff told me about, was called flagrun I believe?

One flag in the middle, push it into opposing team's base.  Sounds simple.  When we played the tf2 port, I was severely disappointed, as there wasn't even a damn flag, and was nothing true to the original.

So, the premise of my map, is an underground complex, long bridge connecting two HQ's, one flag in the middle.  Plant that baby in the enemy team's base, and spill some deadly gas into there for awhile.  Second cap, unlock some mancannons that shoot you across the gap instead of going across the bridge.  Third cap?  Blow the whole damn place up and seize the day.

Hopefully this concept will be easy enough to understand, and will play nicely.

Oh, and there will be the world famous frogs and duckies somewhere.

the new map should be named pl_awseome.
load up TFC and play muderball, while TF2 doesn't support the 4 team thing. Theres also a TF2 murderball, but again its not the same.

Think Bball with one neutral flag, take to the opposing base to win. Or you could do something like torch or epicenter which is a 2 flag push map.

1 flag is less confusing
But I liked PL Awesome... I thought it had real potential if you refined it Sad
pl_awesome is a great map for spys. they never see it coming for when they're going up the vent. and I like that when you get stuck in there as a spy that you can just sit in a corner and backstab people. Big Grin
OH OH OH!!! ME ME ME!!!!!

What if once the intel reaches your base three times, the PL explosion goes off!

But it's really hard to get it there.

Like, for the scenario, the Intel contains TNT or C4 or something...

What do you guys think?

(CTF_proximity?)
Awwww Geoff, but but but pl_awesome has awesome in the name. How can you make a map more awesome than that?

it must be named ctf_moreawesome

Only way.

There are a couple of fairly highly rated push maps on FPSBanana:

Might be worth checking out to get a feel for what works and what fails.

pl_awesome is silly <3
Geoff I have a proposition for you, a commission really except I will pay you only with my appreciation.

How about for your next map you make the perfect RPS map.  Now we all enjoy RPS but the fun is in trying to pick the better class and then trying to make the most of your strengths versus their weaknesses.  What isn't fun is then having a long drawn out battle.  So to make a good RPS map you would have to have a map that didn't favor any class but was also short so each round wouldn't last too long to get boring and you'd have to try and figure out how to solve stalemate problems.

All the maps we use now are bad for RPS so it could be a fun thing to try.

That's a really great idea Surf. Something that always stands out to me in great map design is built-in class balance. When mappers subtley build in slightly more open areas countered with more enclosed alternate routes et cetera, giving every class its own advantage, it gives a map such a more polished feel and makes it infinitely more replayable.

It would be a very interesting excercise to see how well you could implement these ideas in a map as small as possible.

I absolutely love you new map plan.  I was thinking about how to deal with the issue of not having any map based advantages or disadvantages and I came up with some ideas and used my pathetic paint skills to illustrate them.  Feel free to copy anything.

So I was thinking when you get to the top of that hill it will be an arena of death, and what is the greatest arena of death of all time?  The Colosseum!  So that's what my idea is as you run up the stairs it will branch off into three levels like so:

Underneath the entire Colosseum there will be a tunnel maze that leads to the center.  The main level will be completely open and on top of that there will be two small ledges for sniping and sentries and a narrow path that goes completely around.  Here is how I drew it but you can make it round to be more like the colosseum (I'm not good with circles):

Besides the ledges the top level should be a path that is too narrow for sentries or to walk easily to keep it from being abused.  You should be easily knocked off into the water if you are on it.  The tunnels should come up right next to the cap point as well.

I would think the middle point should take a while to cap and the points by the bases super quick.  Having three levels like this would have a place where each class could have an advantage.  The open area for the main battle classes like heavy/solly/demo.  The top for the sniper and also for the engy (the sentries on the ledge should have a place where they can be fired on from safety or the ledges should be so narrow as to only allow one on each).  And the bottom would be for the sneaky classes like pyro/spy.  Scouts and medics can make use of all the tiers depending on what they are matched up against.
I should add that the colosseum shouldn't be as big as the colossuem.  Like a mini-colosseum, or a smallosseum.  Well I mean it should be big enough to handle 12v12 fairly easy, maybe not a smalloseum but I just liked the name (like a mediumosseum?).
Geoff if the arena mode is what I think it is and just applies to a portion of the map, then the RPS map could make an amazing arena map.  Maybe you should try both?
Okay guys, if you care, just finished up alpha1 of the new map.  I just need to figure out how to pack in the skybox.  :-X
Yay! yay? Which map?
