I'm having an issue with steam where non-source based games won't launch.

I'm on windows xp x64. Games outside of steam launch fine, and source games launch fine (half life 2, tf2, etc.), but any other game when launched will start up a process for that game, but doesn't actually do anything - it doesn't crash, either.

I've removed and reinstalled steam as well as the games.

Has anyone had this problem before and can shed light on a solution?
I know Ive had issues with older non-steam games that won't launch under the compatibility mode I set for them in steam. Other than that Ive not had any issues and Im currently running Vista x64
Non steam games run fine, it's non-source games that I bought through steam that aren't running fine. Most games aren't starting, including Dragon Age, Mass Effect, World of Goo, Torchlight, and Braid.

Apparently I'm not the only one having this issue though:

Hm...thats odd, have you tried setting any different launch options on the executable inside of steam?
Yeah, tried -32bit though I'm not sure what else to try as I'm pretty sure that's just for source engine games, also tried disabling the game overlay UI and still no go.

There are a lot of people on steam's forums saying that this also broke for them today, listing some of the same games I can't launch.
