So I'm looking to get a new video card.  Since nvidia's taking their sweet old time and only just now released thier 4XX line of cards (at redonkulously high prices I won't jump into), I'm looking into alternate options and came upon the above two cards.

Now, the thing is, I've seen in just about every benchmark that the 4870 for around the same price of a 5770 (or $20 cheaper depending on where you shop), gets better performance.

But the 5770 is obviously lower power drain, manages to be quieter I hear and runs cooler, DX11 (which isn't a huge deal since nothing will seriously use it for another 2 years at best), etc... however I heard the 5xxx series has MAJOR issues when running under windows 7 due to the card auto-underclocking when idle which can cause major artifacting in all 2D applications (like firefox, 2d games, etc).

Which points me back to the 4870.  It's cheaper, and runs better from what I hear.  It's also only dx10 though, and is much more "inefficent" power/noise/cooling wise.  Thoughts?
my 4890 is awesome and runs everything max settings 1920x1200 no problem
If you're not going to be gaming at high resolutions, just grab a 4850 for $100.
ATI's drivers are still balls.  Especially for opengl and anything older than like 5 years.

Maybe in 2006. Also, for now you may just want to go for a cheap 4870 or 4850 and then when real DX11 titles start rolling out make a more sizable jump.
Yeah that's what I was thinking.  I mean I'm all for having the more power efficent, cooler, and more modern video card, but fact is I'll never use eyefinity or any other snazzy feature like that, and the 5770 is more money for less performance.

I'd prob just get the 4870 since from what I've seen it's a good bit better in performance and only $10-$20 more compaired to the 4850.  Or am I wrong? I've seen 4870's be on sale for about $140 on the low end. Where did you find a 4850 on sale for $100?

not really

and like i said korjax, the 4890 i have runs every single game i have on max settings at 1920x1200 easy
If the 4870 is only 10 bucks more than the 4850, i say go for it

I've been playing Half-Life again lately.

Looks better in OpenGL than DirectX.

It's funny playing Half-Life in software mode too, now that we have processors capable of hitting the framelimit. Looks like a souped up Wolfenstein then.

wtf are you talking about 4850 cant run high res, friend of mine plays tons of shit at 1440x900 with everything maxed and still gets 60 frames

that's not high-res, i have to play bad company 2 on low at 1920x1200 with my 4850

if i put my other 4850 for crossfire, my vid cards overheat

yes my computer is back in an actual case now

That's weird, I can comfortably run the BFBC2 beta on 1400x900 windowed using all med/high settings with a 9600GT. I was under the impression that a 4850 was signifigantly more powerful than the 9600GT.
using an AMD quadcore at 3ghz too

Newer (engine) games like Crysis and BC2 are much more efficient than older engines at low FPS, they appear much much smoother even at extreme low end FPS like 30's
