maybe useful info: i have some linksys modem that's connected to my roommates comp so i have a router on mine

about a month ago my steam wasnt connection to da innernet, i reinstalled, still didnt work, had to fuck around with wireless settings and set my security to wpa2 from WEP, and now my download speeds are 200kb/s, down from 1.8mb/s. 90% sure its wpa2, but any other type of encyption keeps me from connecting to the network. help
1. Don't use wireless
2. Don't use encryption on your wireless
1. i know it sucks
2. my internets will be stole!!

cause it takes like 2 minutes to crack wep last time i checked

also, it sounds like whoever setup your network is a half-breed and put two routers on your setup (or you don't know what a router is)
im not using wep anymore, durp

and im p sure everyone near me has no clue how the internet works seeing as every other connection is labeled linksys and is unsecured, so i dont think they can get in

then why are you worried, hide your SSID or setup a fake one.

how
192.168.1.1
login with the default password, go to wireless tab (the second one from the left), uncheck the box that says broadcast SSID

also, don't use wireless. it's likely

that you're getting wireless interference.

do a site survey and put your shit on a different channel than all the other chodes who have theirs at 6
ok cool thanx bro
okay i disabled security and ssid but it's still slow and i can still see it on the list
try it hardwired into the modem see what you get
what does that mean

also do i have to delete my ssid name for it to get off the list
You can set the wireless ap to only allow connections from specific MAC addresses, that in conjunction with turning the beacon off is enough to secure the network from 98.5% of wireless users out there, 'specially if you have that many freely accessible ap's around you already.
so, i changed the channel, disabled ssid and encryption, still 200kb/s

Vandamguy
