Well, TF2 runs now, but my CPU gets too hot while playing it after just half a minute or so, and crashes my computer. I have the sides of my computer off and a Vornado fan on max elevated by two encyclopedia volumes.

If the sides are on, the CPU will overheat just from the computer operating normally. Same goes for the Vornado not being there.

Speedfan says my fans are all at 100%. My computer generally crashes when the CPU is about 52C; as I'm typing this, my CPU varies from 48C-50C.

I've already ordered some AS5, but is there anything else I could try in the meantime?

Correct me if I'm wrong but your Graphics card is a ATI Radeon HD 4870 right? You may want to dissemble it (providing you feel safe doing so, chance it could go badly) Looks pretty damn similar to my card and there was a Dirt-Clod in the heat sink a little larger than the heat sink and it was making the card idle at about 100c which leaked into the case due to poor ventilation.

It also looks like the PC could use a cleaning anyway. By a can (or three) of compressed air, clean it out carefully (Don't turn the can upside down, sprays some uber-cold liquid-ish stuff (It's a technical term)) As for your CPU heat sink, it might be better to use a tooth-brush to clean it out (Or a Q-Tip)

As for prevention, if you can you might want to get the PC off the floor (Like up onto a desk, not just a wooden block) something to keep it from collecting the access dirt in the room between sweeping-days.

Here's to hoping I helped o.=.o
yeah it sprays lye doesnt it?
yes, lye

Hell if I know, I just remember shooting a can of this stuff at a buddy of mine and he just starts goin "Ow ow ow" in this repetitive, mellow tone so I take the can and go "oh shut up it can't hurt that bad" and sprayed my wrist with the can, then realized it hurt a bit more than I expected...

it was a reference to the last time keyboard cleaner came up and someone thought it used lye

get raped didiot

though it might have been lox not lye so maybe im the didiot
it was lox, and yes, you're an idiot
my gpu's been fine ever since i set the fans permanently at 100%

i guess my case could use a cleaning, idk
Clean that shit, yo.

I seriously clean my unfiltered PCs twice a year.
Vac & duster combo ftw.
Seriously, clean it, and consider pulling the heatsinks to check for problems.  I suppose it's possible that the thermal paste could be fucked up, but who knows.  Make sure the fans aren't all crapped up to boot.

Actaully, replacing the thermal paste on my CPU fixed all my overheating issues. It seemed the prefab stuff had hardened, so I jsut went and got some more and BAM, 80-100C Temp goes down to a constant 40-50C
slightly related but one time i was using computer cleaner and i shot it too close and so it bounced off my computer and into my lungs.  my god the bitter part of my taste buds went fucking crazy.
Put water on it to cool it off.

You have a sexy CPU?
wtf is the giant black thing on the bottom, not the PSU, the other thing

Also wtf clean that shit out =|

Also, canned air is for pussies. (and has no pressure) use an air compressor, a big one. Just stop any fan blades from free spinning, you'll blow out bearings.

Yeah it tastes bad because there's a bitterant in it to prevent people from trying to inhale it, problem is when you run out and decide your gonna shake the can to try to get that last little bit out that bitterant gets airborne, and NOTHING tastes right..
yup
