So I have an HP Pavilion dv6000 (6110ca if I need to be more specific).  Last week, I discovered that my speakers have seemingly just stopped working suddenly.  Computer was in hibernate mode (speakers worked fine in session before hibernation), and when I woke it up, the speakers no longer played any sound what-so-ever.  No matter if I mute/unmute, or fiddle with the volume (laptop's buttons or the mixer itself), I've got nothing.  Headphones work fine if I plug them in though, and the volume buttons still function fine when using headphones.  There is no crackling or anything coming from my speakers, which leads me to believe they aren't blown or anything.  I'm more on the side of it being a software issue rather than a hardware one.

I tried a driver update through Windows itself, and it found a driver update.  Didn't seem to do anything though.  Also, the buttons for volume control/mute were acting up a bit (they are just a touch-sensitive strip rather than hard buttons) when I first restored from hibernation.  Normally, when the computer is muted through the buttons, the symbol goes orange instead of the default blue.  While acting up, touching the button muted the computer but the button would stay blue.  Also, volume bars display on the screen when the volume scroll is used normally, but nothing was coming up despite the slider in the mixer showing that the volume scroll buttons were registering.  They seem to all work fine again now after acting up after the first couple restarts.

Anyone have any ideas on what I could do to fix it?

Oh, I'm running Windows XP on that thing too, BTW.
Use a Linux live CD like Ubuntu and make see if the speakers work.
It's very likely that on board amp popped.
