So... I've never built a rig before and it's something I'd really like to do...

This is a hypothetical rig I pieced together in Newegg: Link

I don't have a high budget, I'd like to keep it in the 700-500 range if possible.

Thoughts from experts?

Do I have the Ram configuration right?
Is 4 GB ram enough?
Will a 3.3GHz dual core processor with an Nvidia GTS 250 last me for a while?

Edit: list updated with suggestions

RAM config looks good, and 4GB is enough for now, but...

Would a 3.0-3.1 GHZ quad core processor be better? (Maybe this: Quadcore?)

Yes, but if we're talking about gaming performance a better video card is a lot more important.

So... move up to the GTS 400? (Or I could SLI it with my 9500...)

I'd agree with duck. I have a 5870 and I love it. Drivers aren't half bad either, steam has a feature to automatically download them for you.
I love the brand choice for the HD.

I hate the model you chose. You chose quite literally the slowest drive possible.

5400RPM, and a green drive. Green drives are meant for anything that doesn't need to load fast, it probably won't be any faster than whatever HD you're using right now, if that fast.

Want a good 1TB drive?

Also Win7 and any modern game will lol all over a dual-core

$25 more gets you This quad core that's meant to eat things and lol for more.

I'm on a bit of a budget and I'm not quite sure how the Radion cards scale (I know how the Nvidias do, second digit being important and all)

I picked out a 5770 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.as...814150447.

Thoughts?

The card seems solid enough for your price range, and seems like a generally better pick than the one in your wish list. I just went through that list now; I don't have any experience with ATI or AMD, but you certainly found some good budget parts. Not many red flags here for your price range--though I dunno what you're doing with those SATA cables, any mobo worth its salt should come with all the cables you need. I'm guessing you have some specific use for those, so never mind. Only suggestion I have is to scour the combo deals and see if you can find something good that exactly or at least closely matches your parts & criteria.

Turns out your CPU and case can be bought as a combo to save $20.
Here's a combo with a disk reader and a better PSU than the one you have. About the same total cost as what you have now, but a better deal.
Your mobo and OS also come as a combo to save you another $10.
But then I found a marginally better deal.
Save $15 when you get your video card and OS together.

Also, you shouldn't need those extra cables unless if you have some special use for them that we weren't informed of.

Cool, I tacked on the extra SATA because the mobo i picked only came with one.

Thanks for spotting the combo deals, Didzo. I'm probably going to miss out on them because it's gonna be a little while until I can scrounge up the dough to put this gal together.

I want to leave myself the opportunity to add more ram and crossfire the 5770 in the wayfar distant future

I plan on doing deal diligence once I am prepared to pull the trigger on the parts. Maybe the time it'll take me to leverage b-day/get better (actual) job/raise the cash/get game-able credit card will let the prices drop a little bit more Smile

THANKS EVERYBODY!

I'll let y'all know when this comes to fruition. For now it's a financial
the 4850 gives you better performance than the 5770 (albeit slightly) for 1/3 less, but the 4850 sounds like a jet engine and it needs more power
