Ok, instead of spamming everywhere about this, I'm going to put my progress here and ask my questions here. So, here's what I've got so far.

I've been trying to sew prototypes in the last few days in the hopes of working out how I want her backpack to look. It's quite round and I've been unsure of what to do. I want it to be functional because some of the other costumes I've seen have simply made a pillow in the right shape stuffed to fill it up.

Here's a reference photo of the character's design:

After dicking around with it, here are the two options I'm going to stick with. PLEASE keep in mind that these are just really quick tests with scrap fabric. I'll be taking a lot more time and care when I finally do decide on a finished product. I want to do this as early as I can in case I run into big snags.

Option one

This one has a sidewall so it's a bit thicker than the second option. It's not quite round though which is bothering me, and HeK is right... it doesn't look QUITE right. It's too pill like. Still, it was one of the better attempts. I fail at sewing...

Option Two

I think this one better. I made some mistakes on the edges of the top flaps there on the front, but again it was just super quick and a sort of last-ditch attempt. I like this one better, it has the right shape and it is quite doable to make. Right now, the back panel is one solid color but I think that will work just fine (of course I still want opinions on this). It'll be against my back so it won't really be seen, and I hope that the straps when I put them on the real deal will be in a position that promotes it staying on my back.

So, I would love some feedback about this so far.

Otherwise I've ordered the socks, which are on the way; once I have something to show, I'll dress up with what I've got. I bought the shoes I'm going to use for this today too:

I think they'll work. There were better Mary Jane's out there, but I think having a tad bit of a heel is a good idea for me and my legs. If they're flat it's not as flattering for the good ole' gams.
I like how #2 looks for sure, and I totally dig you on the reason for picking the shoes you did. Looking forward to seeing the rest!

And Secondly, I'm with the #2 option also.  Should be a fun outfit idea when it is all done ^^
I like the shape of the second one but I'm thinking unless you stuff it completely with things, it will kind of sag towards the bottom. The first design will probably give your backpack more shape overall and you can probs alter it to look more spherical.

I drew out in Paint an idea i had in mind for you to try but china firewall won't let me upload it to tinypic Sad I'll post it when I get back to the states in a week or so.
Lol awesome Maxon!

Thanks Kase! I am thinking that I would probably stuff option two anyway with some clothes or something soft and light. I was also thinking of using interfacing or something to help it keep it's shape and to avoid the sagging. Do you think that would work?
I can't say I know much about this, but maybe just a simple wire frame on the inside to help hold the shape? That way it's kept light and if you want to, could still be functional perhaps?
I'm hoping to avoid wire frames as I'm pretty sure I'd fuck that up somehow. I'm not very skilled.

I like the idea of interfacing though. It's basically a stiff fabric that is sewn on the inside where you don't see it that helps things keep their shape. I'm going to try that first I think.
I'd just assumed she was going to turn it into a giant pillow, perhaps throw a bag of rice at the bottom to give it some weight so it doesn't float all over on the straps.

There are a lot of different grades of interfacing, I would use a light to medium kind, if you use the heaver stuff it will come out super stiff.

True.

My sewing machine would also choke on it. I'm probably going to use light or something. It can hardly handle sewing three+ layers of fabric without pitching a fit.
The socks came in today and they were EXTREMELY disappointing. Nothing like they were suggested to be.

So, it's back on the drawing board for something better.

Suggestions of sites or items are welcome...

Oh my god, all the socks I ever wanted are here

Ok, I think I'm going to have to modify some socks to get the job done. I'm going to wait a few days to see if you guys have any other suggestions, but so far I want to get this pair and find a way to modify them so the stripes look good.

I looked at a lot of other pairs, and these ones have the best stretch that I could tell, geared towards plus size, etc. I might save a bit of money this way...

Kyle, you may tip me in BTC.
Holy shit, this store has the most amazing customer service.

I emailed them and asked them if they had any suggestions for socks I could use for this cosplay, even sent them the same reference image I have here. They responded in the evening on a friday and found me a pair that will work perfectly for half the price of the one I just bought. They've apparently had this request already just last week... and because of it are probably going to start a line of two-striped socks, they said.

I am in love.
Awesome.
well dont that beat all
