Thought I'd start a 'Nerd Cred' thread. Post things you've done that you think make you nerdy, besides being a member of BRBu, of course. Hopefully this won't devolve too badly into an ePeen thread, but we'll see.

- I've built all 5 of the computers I've owned from individual components.
- One of those computers is an HTPC/media server that's connected directly to my HDTV and downloads my favorite shows automagically via RSS feeds.
- I've played Warhammer 40,000 for 16 years, and own 5 armies of 2,000 points or more.
- I own a 114mm (4.3") reflecting telescope, that I recently upgraded to be fully robotic (will automatically slew to stars, track them across the sky). The camera for long-exposure pictures should be arriving today actually, but I won't be able to test them because its been raining here pretty solid for the last few weeks.
- I have many many many many unfinished electronics projects sitting in my computer room in my apartment.
- For that matter, I specifically looked for two-bedroom apartments so that I could have my desktop computer and misc projects separated from my bed.
- I bought a sewing machine specifically to do cosplay costumes ;x
- I cosplayed as a TF2 Medic at ACEN
- I have two 7' tall bookshelves devoted to mostly Sci-Fi books.
- I have two more 7' tall bookshelves devoted to works-in-progress (armies to be painted, a few electronics projects, partial cosplay costumes).
- I have a massive DVD collection, including all 10 seasons of Stargate SG-1.
- I play in a casual Magic: The Gathering league...at work during lunchtime twice a week. Big Grin
- I own my own domain name and have for 10 years. I've done various things with it, although I think the best thing to do with it right now is turn it into a projects wiki. Too bad that's one of the projects ;x
- I've been programming since the age of 7, and can program in a dozen languages.
- I got a job as a Pharmacy Technician while in High School, got certified, and kept that job for 7.5 years to put my way through Electrical Engineering school.
- I currently write control software for multimillion dollar industrial corrugated cardboard printing equipment. I'm the sole automation engineer responsible for the closest thing to a robot my company makes.
- At my old job (working for a controls distributor), I wrote software as a contractor for a number of different companies' machines. If you eat a pecan in the US, there's a good chance it went through a sorting machine I programmed.
- I own a Virtual Boy and a Super Scope 6.

I know HeK and Ainmosni are probably going to have me beat on computer stuff, and Karrde's going to take the cake for cosplay, but it'd be interesting to see what all you guys do besides play games and troll each other on the forums Wink

- I'm a huge Comic nerd, with enough useless knowledge about the DC Universe to have a degree on it (and next week it'll be useless, lol)
- I've played almost every single TCG released. From Magic, Pokemon, Raw Deal, Yugi, Legend of Five Rings, etc. Currently back on Pokemon
- I used to like Cosplay before realizing Cons are full of weird girls who'll stalk you, jealous fellow cosplayers and rigged contests.
- I built my own Arcade stick using Arcade cabinet pieces (new) and a Xbox 360 Controller board. I built the wooden case and attached the wires.
- I know more about Pokemon than i should have
- I  (along with Uni's assistance) organized the first Pokemon National Tournament after Platinum came out. It was a decent success.
- So far, everytime my teachers do a evaluation test (test journalism professors do on the first class to see how much do you know about the subjects that are going to be impartes that term) i'm the best grade, even better than the ones obtained by people doing the course again.
- I know how to do paper swans
Well, my nerd cred, I'm mostly a software geek but here we go:
  • I've been using computers since before the 90s started, starting off with a commodore 64 and my first x86 machine was this (although officially it predated the actual x86 architecture).
  • I have over 50 servers under my direct control right now, this number used to be closer to 500 in a previous job.
  • I started working as a system engineer before I turned 18 and made my carreer from there without any education.
  • I know these programming/scripting languages: C, C++, Java, Python, Perl, Ruby, PHP, javascript, (ba)sh script and BASIC started it all off on the C64.
  • I have debugged glibc to find out why some system calls weren't cached and found it a ginormous mess.
  • I know quite a bit about the inner workings of operating systems and how they interface with hardware. (Which oddly enough is a great fit with at0m.)
  • I have my own domain and admin a few domains of friends, I also host web sites, mail, jabber (xmpp) and anti-spam for these domains.
  • Besides my work servers, I have two private servers, one very low specced NAS (will be replaced soon) and my VPS in the datacenter. I use the VPS for most of my private server needs like web development, DNS, mail, jabber, etc etc etc
  • For many tasks, I prefer a good command line interface because I can work faster and more efficient with it.
  • I have built most of my computers and quite a few for my friends.
  • I used to be a big trekkie, owning all the series on VHS and playing the collectible card game.
  • On that note, I'm still a huge sci fi fan, with some of my favourites being Doctor Who, Babylon 5, Star Trek and Stargate SG-1.
  • I don't keep DVDs, finding digital copies easier to keep.
  • I have built my own custom android ROMs.
  • I met my girlfriend online (through this community) and got her to move in with me, even though I lived on the other side of the atlantic.
  • I know how to format this post well.

Also, I'll add stuff to here when I think of it.
GIVE ME YOUR LUNCH MONEY NERDS!!!!
compared to all my friends i have a large collection of video games in the nes-gcn era

thats honestly about it other than being on the computer a majority of my time when im bored
I've built three computers so far, and am planning on building one for a friend near Christmas.
My philosophy on the purchasing DVD's goes like this: Blu-Ray or full-price if you loved the movie, sale if you liked it, never buy what you haven't seen.
Total movie junkie, but that probably doesn't count as a nerd thing.

I'm a poor example of a nerd.

don't you have a warthog to drive or something?
I collect guns.

But I guess that makes me a redneck more than a nerd.

Wait. I also still have my collection of Battletech CCG cards. In fact, Caffeine and I played a round for the first time in years at ACEN this past May. I plan on playing it again this year.
  • Well iunno

I knew (and probably still know) too much about the Star Wars universe
I used to role play in various settings online (fantasy, Star Wars, X-Files)
I own like thirty books from the extended Star Wars universe
When I was a young'un I asked my hairdresser for a Luke Skywalker haircut (and I even brought a picture to show her). "I want this exact haircut." "... are you sure?" "YES I AM SURE"
    Cosplayin'
    Gaems
    Some tabletop
I played an entire D&D campaign online: my best internet but setup a laptop on the table with the rest of the group and I had my webcam, so I was just ... "there".[/li]
I collect/am fascinated by rocks

That's about all I can think of for now

More: played Liesure suit Larry, beat Jill of the jungle a million times, used to host multiplayer Jedi knight games on dial up, had too many share ware game discs that I still prefer to many modern games, played crystal caves, printed banners in print shop on my dot matrix, etc.
I own a binary clock, and I've memorized the first 50 digits of pi.
in all seriousness though, is anyone here a CLOSET nerd?

i am for sure.

nobody except those closest to me know that i have an extensive knowledge of computers/software/tech, watch the animu from time to time, play vidya religiously, and etc, and even then, the people that know hardly know even the gist of it.

i guess i prefer to keep nerd life and regular life separate?

-I own two Warhammer 40k armies(blood angels, and necrons), two Warhammer Fantasy armies(Dark Elves, Lizardmen), one Warmachine army(Cryx), and one Hordes army(Circle Orboros).
-I play MTG, settlers of catan, and munchkin.
-I read comics
-I'm a cs major Tongue
-I built the desktop I'm currently using
-I've owned pretty much every major console since the NES, and I even have an old donkey kong game & watch
-Back in elementary school I was the first one in my group of friends to like pokemon Tongue
-I've met the original cast of Mighty Morphin Power Rangers
-I own two Street Fighter TE fightsticks

I'm a pretty big tabletop nerd  8)

- i've built two desktops for myself and one for my brother
- i own like 5 figures
- getting a touhou bodypillow within a couple of weeks
- i own three fightsticks
- did i mention touhou
- i've played a lot of games i guess
- anime
I've "learned" to program in two different "languages" (quotations on learned because I've since forgotten, and quotations on languages because they were VB and Java)
I've cosplayed on two different occasions, with two different costumes.
I've watched maybe...20 anime series to completion? And a few mangas.
I have built two desktop computers and consider electronics a hobby (despite my relative cluelessness with the subject).
I have played D&D, M:TG, and Warhammer 40k.
I am the leader for a comp TF2 team which is probably the most ridiculous thing on this list.
I maintain a higher GPA than probably 90% of my friends.
I had an e-girlfriend.
My current girlfriend's primary interests are video games and cosplaying, and I enjoy that fact.

Still, I don't feel like being a nerd/otaku/geek/cosplayer really defines me. These are all just interests and I feel like labeling myself as a "geek" wouldn't be representative.

probably me

in any social situation i try to keep things related to whatever the main topic people are talking about, luckily most of my friends like playing games from time to time so whenever the topic of vidya gaems come up its not exactly awkward or avoided, its just another conversation

everyone knows i would kick their ass in smash bros too  8)

I'm dodgy about it in social situations. Pretty much all of my friends are gamers though, so it's not a big deal.

I can also use the cover of "I'm in a band" to not seem like I have no life.
$I used to teach myself HTML when I was, like, 10 and then make my own pathetic websites for fun.
$Ever heard of Neopets? Well, I still have over 4 million neopoints in my account haha and I used to design webpages for my neopets.
$I've been seriously cosplaying since I was 14 (since my Pikachu costume for Halloween when I was 7 doesn't really count). First cosplay was Roy Mustang from FMA.
$I used to Oekaki  bahaha
$I have a collection of Pokemon figures

I also do non-stereotypical nerdy things such as athletics so I kind of think of myself as a nerdy athlete. Is that even possible?

I've mentioned it in IRC before, but I guess it's time to reveal it to the masses:

- I am a moderator on GameFAQs.
