August 27:
Starting the cosplay journal.
Today I went to WeirdStuff.
I got some thick yellow cables, and an old adding machine.
This is going with the vintage calculators that I got off of eBay last week.

THINGS TO ACQUIRE AND BUILD:
 • wrench
 • PDA (in progress)
 • long yellow wire (parts)
 • overalls
 • right hand glove
 • hard hat (complete; need to break the suspension so it tilts the right way)
 • goggles
 • tool belt
 • ammo pouch
 • "Teddy Roosebelt" style koala plush
 • knee pads
 • boots

Gloves? I would think it would be just one. Dunno if this is just a typo or what youre actually planning. Will be interesting to see the whole thing, though

this, all day long
8/28:
Good start to the day. Bacon and coffee.
Off to Harbor Freight in the next couple of days, to get a cheap rotary carving tool to hollow out the PDA, and some 2-part epoxy putty to make sure parts stay where I want them to.
Spoiler Alert: I already own a cowboy hat IRL.
Yup. I'm aware. I'll be procuring a large ammo pouch sooner rather than later, so we can make sure we get a plush that fits.
Well the two solutions are to either buy a koala plush and modify it or make the whole thing from scratch...dunno...making clothes and a mod would probably be easier...

or you could get caff to make it
If caff thought he could make it (time/skills/etc), he wouldve volunteered himself, I would think.

Go to Korea apparently. Rubber Glove Story

But it might be smarter to just buy a pair in your own country and just save the left handed one for a pyro cosplay.
I'm going to take out all the circuit boards and buttons from the Datakeeper, and hollow it out inside, just gluing the outside shells of the memory modules into place.

8/29/2011:
Slow going, all the grinding implements are liquifying the plastic "sawdust" which then re-adheres to the cut edges. Datakeeper PDA is in pieces with the front keypad area cut out.
Rotary tool battery recharging.
I was going to make it a 4x4 keypad but the shell won't hold it.
The game's PDA is only 3x3 so I'll just use the 1-9 number keys as my base.
The spring action requires there to be a backing plate so I'll cut the keypad out and grind a random piece of circuit board to fit, and glue those bad boys together.

Turn your speed down if the plastic is melting, and take more frequent 'breaks' from actively grinding to let the part cool.

Alternately, submerge it in something, but that's probably not a good idea for your grinder.

That melted slag is very easy to slice off with a good x-acto blade.
Went to Harbor Freight again, got a set of hacksaws.
Discussing gloves on IRC; best to have a functioning right hand rather than a large toony glove.

I'm planning another dremel day today. I epoxied the old EPROM cartridges into place, because their shells need to be part of the outside, and I'm grinding away the bits that held them in.

Sorry, behind on posting. The 9-key section of adding machine board has been ground down till it fits inside the PDA shell. (May as well start calling it the Build Tool now.)
I've got the roommate's light box out and am making drawings from the screenshots I took. We're going to her sewing studio tomorrow.
I have 3 pairs of old baggy jeans about the same color, and one pair of Dickies overalls* to use as a pattern (and a source for rivets, eyes, and buckles).
Tomorrow I will have some pictures. I'd better charge up the old camera so I'm not obliged to use my cell phone.

*Why not wear those overalls? They're too small, wrong shade of blue, and, like every other pair of commercial denim overalls, sewn with WHITE thread. This is not good enough. I want it to photograph somewhat like it looks in the game, with dark seams, so we are going to use some orange thread.

EDIT: Shit happened. Postponed.
