I'm at my college apartment and can't connect to the internet through the modem in my room. Currently I am connected to my roommate's wireless network and that works fine but my local area connection fails to authenticate every time I try to connect. I really don't know anything about this stuff so help would be appreciated.

try restarting your internet splitter
If you're talking about an on-campus apartment using internet provided by the college, they tend to have special instructions listed somewhere on the IT section of their website that tell you how to connect.
I had settings last year for authentication log in when I was on campus. I just had to turn off some authentication settings and it works, so I'm on ethernet and using a real desk again for the first time since april. Thanks for the help and expect to see my tf2 game improve accordingly  ;D
