You know what sucks? Homework sucks. Someone give me an interesting conversation to break the monotony of having to read an entire college textbook in one night.
Thanks to continued cuts to the NOAA's budget, our aging weather satellites may soon fail and be unable to be replaced. Thus the United States will actually fall back to a time that we are less able to monitor and predict the weather than we were 20 years ago. Discuss.
Someday you will look back on this as the best time of your life.
Lol I totally will. Just hate the homework part of it.
As for the satellites...MY GOD WHAT ARE WE GONNA DO?! Seriously if we hadn't seen Hurricane Irene coming, those 30 mph winds could have toppled New York City. Haha weather doesn't much concern me. I live in Arizona and there are no natural disasters or weather fluctuations here. Being a Phoenix weather reporter is the easiest job in the world. "We'll have clear and sunny skies with temps in the 100's all week."

Why are you trying to read an entire textbook in one night?
I thought you were going to start reading it yesterday? I haven't started yet either, but I got my english, humanities, and math homework done today.
I got a couple pages done yesterday but started playing LoL with Calvin and a guy from work. Now I'm on page 105 of 160, and I still have the AVID pdf to do. What day is your TCM class?

also i'd just like to point out real quick how incredibly dumb this makes you sound.  Over 50 people were killed by Irene, and more than 10 billion dollars of damage caused.  Do you really think it would have been the same result if we had no advance warning?

Shhh.

Just sit back and enjoy.
Of course it was devastating down south as most hurricanes are, no doubt about that. As for the advance warning system, it's very useful to have and I see no reason that we should just do away with it. I just think that evacuting downtown Manhattan was stupid.
My bad I checked my facts wrong. I thought there had been no deaths in NY. Yeah, I feel like an insensitive ass.

GODDAMMIT I WILL HAVE MY DRAMA WHAT IS THIS

but yeah the evac of NYC looks silly in hindsight because the storm ended up not being as powerful when it hit.  Unfortunately, predicting hurricane paths/strength into the future is a pretty shaky business due to the chaotic nature of the system.

Actually, the podcast "On the Media" had a blurb about this in their most recent edition, it turns out that although Irene was considered to be "overhyped", it had the "correct" proportion of coverage relative to the damage costs, and was actually under-covered in terms of deaths.  It's a really good podcast, pretty much the only one that I still listen to regularly besides smodcast Smile

ps where's the smodcast discussion thread at
