Curious as to what BRB's status on this was. I'm wholly against it, it's pretty unsettling what this could mean to the internet if it got passed.

There's an excellent article on it here.

From what 2 minutes of skimming I did, this sounds bad. Old people need to stop fucking around with the internet, it always ends badly for everyone involved.

If you want to get noticed, don't write in with a form letter! (not saying form letters are bad, but personal letters are more effective)
Great another way to waste money. would someone finally tell the legislative branch that the internet is not a series of tubes that can just be shut off?

It's the truth! And it's going to be even more depressing when the letter I wrote is completely ignored, or at best, I get a form letter response.  :'(
Thought you lads might want to see this, I got a response (Canned, but a response none the less.)

Quote:Thank you for contacting me to share your thoughts regarding the Preventing Real Online Threats to Economic Creativity and Theft of Intellectual Property Act of 2011 (S. 968). I appreciate hearing from you about this important issue.

As you are aware, this legislation aims to crackdown on the illegal online sale of counterfeit goods. Key provisions in the legislation include, narrowing the definition of an internet site "dedicated to infringing activities," and giving authorization to the Attorney General to bring actions against online infringers operating a rogue internet site.  In addition, this legislation would provide protection for domain name registries, registrars, search engines, payment processors, and advertising networks from damage resulting from their voluntary action against a rogue internet site.

Most recently, the bill has been voted out of the Senate Judiciary Committee. However, this legislation has not been introduced in the House. Rest assured I will keep your views in mind as Congress continues to work on this issue.  Thank you again for your correspondence.

Sincerely,

Tim Ryan
Member of Congress

My Congressman (Lee Terry) is a cosponsor for this cruel abortion of a bill.

You should write a letter to them telling them that they're a terrible person for being a
corporate sell-out and will never vote for them if it passes.

That's not the worst of it, Nintendo, Sony, and EA all support the bill, as well as about a dozen other well-known gaming companies.
As scary is this is, if you join up on the mailing list for something like demand-progress.org, you end up realizing there is always a bill like this trying to get passed and it is always shot down to get "revised" or shot down altogether. This one is only a bit interesting due to it being a bit more progressed than usual and having a bit more corporate support, but since the whole scare of net neutrality stuff like this has been brought up time and time again.

By no means am I wanting to say this is nothing. It is a big deal, but it just isn't a new thing by a long shot.
