So, the idea was floated at Otakon during drunk discussions that with the number of people we bring to ACEN every year we could do a skit in the masquerade. Especially next year as I don't think we'll be having the TF2 group time.

This thread is to discuss pros/cons, gauge interest, and gather ideas...

What would a skit involve?
  • Time Commitment - There will be judging and rehearsal since we can't really rehearse due to distance, things like pizza trips if you choose to participate will be no bueno, not to mention the ~4 hour time block on Saturday the masquerade takes up
  • Audience Comfort - Can you get up in front of 1000+ people?
  • Construction - Must be able to make your own stuff (75% of your costume), potentially you might not have to make anything if someone else in the group makes your costume, but this can put unnecessary strain on a few people making lots of costumes
  • Stage Ninjas - If you can't construct we will still probably need at least 2 stage ninjas
  • Floor Props - Ideally this would not be a lot, bringing a bunch of set pieces could be really burdensome, but also possible....

Idea Catalog:
  • Silent Protagonist Support Group - Comedy group thing with characters from multiple series, one 'therapist' will be the only character to talk, notable silent protagonists - Chrono, Link, Chell, Gordon Freeman, Samus, Red

Edit: I swear to god no dance skits, so overplayed...comedy is best
Voting for the therapist to be court mandated to be there as community service as punishment for criminal negligence, either Dr. Mario (got his patient addicted to pills) or Nurse Joy (let Pokemon die in her Center).

Also, don't forget our other "protagonist" idea of the Tetris Line Piece, who shows up late. :V
I dig this idea.  I could come up with quite a few ideas.

Post them!

Also if anyone is interested in participating we're going to need people, no matter what we do
Depends on what characters you need, I'll do it.
Count me in, Cuz I swear I'm gonna be there for acen '14.

I can't craft at all so costumes are out, but I can stage ninja
I'll do blackops again if required

Crono and Gordon Freeman are probably shoe ins XD
I still want to do a TF2 dance skit with fake fighting. Not sure how many people are into dance or how practical it would be for people with no dance experience, but it would involve a few structured parts. I'm thinking 3-4 people per team.

Main things needed:
- 1-2 dance team leaders
- A sound mixer (I can try to mix sound myself but it's probably going to be janky at best)
- 5 to 7 additional people who can find a costume in the right color and are willing to practice

Problems:
- Relatively complicated
- Requires dance skill, or at least willingness to practice
- Dangerous to props/costume parts (we can remove most costume parts as long as you're still recognizable)

Benefits:
- Will look good
- It's fairly easy to practice individually / in pairs except for a fairly straightforward walk-on
- You will get ripped practicing

Approximate Choreography - Keep in mind that examples are rough at best, we can figure out specifics if there's enough interest.

1. Face-off - red and blu teams face off (30 secs): Girls [Lost Talent] vs Guys [KI] Street Dance Battle (The Jump Off 71)
- Blu Team busts a move (10 secs): Look At Me Now Choreography- Chris Brown ft. Busta Rhymes- @scott4syth | Scott Forsyth (starts at 00:30)
- Red Team busts a move (10 secs): Watermelon Sundae- Dom Kennedy CHOREOGRAPHY by Scott Forsyth

2. Mortal Kombat SFX, Free Fighting Time starts

3. Free fighting time (1 min) w/ Unreal Tournament SFX
Pair up with someone on the opposite team, ranged attacks will be easier than melee attacks. Feel free to improvise depending on prop or dance ability. String moves together relatively quickly. Use filler (simple flares, hops, or breakdancing) if needed.
- Simple Front Roll: How to teach and support a Forwards Roll
- Machine gun skit: I'm looking for this, I basically did this exact move with eightball @ acen 2013. One person pretends to shoot a machine gun and the other pretends to get hit in their torso. Basically like a Jackie Chan movie.
- Safe falls: Acting Tips: Stage Combat for Plays : How to Fall Down Backwards in Stage Combat
- Sword fight: UNL Stage Combat Sword Fight
- Throw hats at each other
-

4.
One by one people fall, team leaders remain, haven't decided who yet
Team Leaders face off

5. Fight with references to the matrix, mortal combat etc. Participants can make their own moves. (30 - 45 secs)

6. Someone wins and gets the intel or whatever, Announcer says the final line (5 secs)
I've got 9 months to deal with stage fright and learn how to dance. Other than that, I'm your huckleberry.
As long as I can stuff the costume into a suitcase, I'm down.

I've never been in front of a 1000+ audience but if I know what I have to do, I think I could overcome any potential stage fright.
I'm interested in participating! Of course I'll have to get over my stage fright and get /fit/, but I'm game!
Stage fright is why I did tech crew in high school Tongue And I'd forgotten how much I enjoyed it until I did puppet work for Caff's skit at Otakon 2012, I'd love to do that kind of thing again.
I'd be up for something on stage, I have a bit of stage fright, but honestly, don't care so much about it.

There may be repeat con-goers, but I'm sure I've shared this story from my great grandfather in WWII (I will tell it from his perspective).

Quote:Great Grandfather: Frank
His Friend/Fellow Troop: Eli

They are on a convoy going somewhere, in the back of a troop transport. The Nazi Side (Grandfather wasn't there by choice) the troop transport had side doors.

Frank: (Whispering) psst... Eli, I have to go
Eli: (Pointing to a small bit of hay in the corner where they often piss) Frank, then go
Frank: No no... I have to go..
Eli: Frank, you mean...?
Frank: Yes, here, hold my gun and use it to hold the door open.
Eli: But Frank, the people working in the fields won't they see you?
Frank: Eh... Never seen them before, never see them again.

And so my great grandfather shat out a moving vehicle with is ass showing to the people in the fields.

So yeah, there are repeat con-goers, and you may look like a fool in front of your friends, but most those people in the audience won't see you again, yeah you might bump in to them on a different day of the con, but who cares? Sometimes being "that one guy from that skit" can be fun!

Ditto.
A-Are we still going through with this or no? I hope we are, it seems like a rad idea!
Pick a character and run with it. I still want to do Gordan Freeman so I can run around with my OTP

But where will you get the goatee, glasses, and engineering sensibility?

[/quote]I'll fake it until I make it. Been doing it for 15 years, might as well continue.
