Here is a great online tool for simulating how your mech will generate heat:

You need 0.5 seconds between shots to avoid ghost heat.  Don't be afraid to alpha if you can get in and out of cover to cooldown (provided your ghost heat isn't too bad).  If you are in a brawl though you should manage your heat to avoid shutting down and dying.
I wish it had chainfire simulation so I could compare various methods.
I'll post this here because you can use it to more accurately calculate relevant DPS. Sustainable dps isn't always meaningful when you're peeking out, near maxing, then falling back. It'll also help people who have been expressing confusion about damage.

yeah for whatever reason (laziness) they only list a few clan ballistic and clan missiles but no energies.
