So, I have the new computer up.  Everything is awesome, it's running great and I'm getting like 100+ FPS most of the time.  The only problem I'm having is that this computer seems to have a higher ping than my old laptop did; I used to get around 70ish on the main server, now I'm pinging above 100.  It's not a HUGE deal, since it's still in a relatively reasonable range, but I'm wondering if there's anything I can do to lower it.  I tried opening a QoS on the router but it didn't really change anything.  I'm not sure why this is happening since nothing's changed about my internet connection; I'm assuming it's something with Vista, but I'm not sure what.
Don't use wireless?

This actually will help, wired > wireless for gaming

Aerox

It's wired.
Your laptop still ping 70 on the server? My ping on #1 has changed a lot recently, I used to always get around 40, now I'm getting like 15...
Check your drivers, otherwise I dunno.
Most of the time Luin and I get identical 'ping' on servers. Sometimes she is 10-15% faster.
Pfffft.

I've had to live with my ping in the hundreds for longer than any of you! :<

Did anything change in how the cables are laid out to your new PC? What kind of NIC do you use? Do a traceroute to the server and see what hop adds the lag, it might just be that your ISP has changed routing and that it has nothing to do with your new PC...

Actually, I think td wins. frickin' 400 ping
Seriously, don't use wireless.  Wired is like three times faster or something. It's usually 40 mbs for wireless, compared to 100mbs wired.  That's what it is for me at least.  I don't really know where those numbers come from either, because I don't know a single person getting speeds even close to 40mbs, and certainly not 100.

Is it the maximum speed the wires/wireless signal can handle?  Thats the only thing I could think that it is.
For Cat5, yes. That being said, my dorm has a lot of unused bandwidth; I would get much faster transfer rates if they would update the wiring here.
No Stringball wins. he has 900 ping on average and is pretty much invincible. he doesn't kill many people but I only saw him die once last night.  Tongue
he was a guy playing on the server last night. he was damn near invincible with his 940 ping. it switched to 100 for like 2 seconds and then went back to 940.

I think you're confusing Megabytes and Megabits... Network speeds are usually described in bits instead of bytes and there are 8 bits into one byte so the theoretical maximum speed of a 100 mbit connection is 12.5 mbyte... That is without overhead from TCP/IP off course so that speed will be a bit lower in practice...
Did you Port Forward Steam and TF2?
