Quote:March 25, 2009 - Left 4 Dead Update Released
Updates to Left 4 Dead have been released. The updates will be applied automatically when your Steam client is restarted. The specific changes include:
Game and client changes
Introduced fatigue to the melee attack in versus mode. You will see a HUD display when your melee swing is cooling down
Boomer vomit will now pass through common infected
Addressed some surround sound detection issues
Fixed a rare crash when exiting Left4Dead on Windows Vista
Fixed a case where the complete all expert campaigns achievement was not being rewarded
Dedicated server changes
Corrected an issue where Windows based dedicated were sending spurious shutdown notifications to the master causing them to delist temporarily
Fixed dedicated servers not resetting the versus team swap correctly--you could join a dedicated server that had a previous game that was swapped and arrive on the other team than what was selected in the lobby
Renamed the tags for sv_search_key to use "key:" in the server tags instead of "sv_search_key." This should help with issues of the 63 character limit of server tags
Fixed an occasional server crash related to voting
Fuck yes. Melee spam no more! I hope.
This is one step for man, one giant lead forward for versus's mode.
Renamed the tags for sv_search_key to use "key:" in the server tags instead of "sv_search_key."
so to get on the brbu server we 'type key: brbu'

I like the people complaining about shiva stackers. We're going to have to go into a server with alltalk and stack and start chanting Mecha-Shiva.

Why? Out of all the things that weren't wrong with the game, that was pretty much the only thing that DID need a fix in vs.
haha, i made a thread making fun of the crybabys and it got deleted, yet there are about 50 threads of people cutting their wrists.

Boomer Vomit - good, should be like this, just like the smoker tongue
Fatigue? Seriously?
Initial reaction is, "does not jive"
All else equal, infected already rape survivors, so what does this do know, does it mean you can melee only once and then theres a cool down before you can melee again?
Or is it that like a bar that continually charges, so you can melee a bunch of times, but if it runs dry you gotta wait a bit for it to charge back up...
After the smoker update where he can grab through normal infected I have not had a problem with melee stackers, you just go for a boom, then smoke someone out and have a hunter pounce someone who tries to come out at you.
Played for a little while last night... It's something you have to get used to, but it's not a cool down on every swing. You get like 3-5 rapid then cooldown every subsequent.. there is obviously a timer on how many swings/second to start the cooldown process and when to end it. I didnt find it happennig much once it was engrained in my mind. just more of the: knockback then shoot instead of meleeing them to death. nly time its tough is with boomers bc you cant really even see where to shoot. I see FF becomnig a problem in expert without being able to melee only, but overall not much of a problem for vs.

You can still melee spam in expert, this change is for versus only, much like the hunter pounce knocking people around, Ive gotten so used to it it freaks me out when suddenly a team mate gets pounced and I didn't get knocked around.
Yeah it's like a cool down. You can still hit a special infected 4 times to kill him with melee, but after that you'll have a 1.5 second or so cooldown before you can melee again, and then after that melee another 1.5 second cool down (unless you wait a little before meleeing again). It's a small change but it makes it better I think. You still "shiva stack" but atleast now you actually have to shoot shit instead of sitting in a corner holding mouse2.
Personally I would have liked this to happen in campaign mode too. I'm not a fan of "secretly" (to newcomers atleast) making one mode behave differently in game mechanics than another mode fundementally. Would certainly make expert mode actually boost in challenge that requires more than basic teamwork (currently it's more effective to melee than really use your skill with a gun except against a tank or witch in expert I think).
*appear* Did they release a reason for me to play this game again?
Oh well, see you all next month.
Melee Fatigue might just get me back in the game. I was always getting stuck as a hunter and nothing sucked more than getting randomly smacked off from my attack and then raped from someone spamming melee to death and was really ruining things I thought. It was just a annoyance that pissed me off since I really liked playing Versus after getting bored with co-op. This, combined with the April content update, will have me back and playing. I'm just hoping the next content update won't be as far away as this little minor update took.

Lol wut?
I know this has renewed my interest in versus a bit more. I still say that melee should hurt teammates (even if it's just 1 or 2 damage), but this stops all that bullshit hiding in a corner nonsense. Something else that might work is no clipping through teammates, but at least the melee spam problem has been acknowledged.
Now if they'd only introduce some short, 2-3 chapter campaigns that you could play in like 30-45 minutes...

If you have two teams of equal skill the infected should win if they all hit at once, maybe not the first time, but it should whittle them down enough for them to win
