Well, first things first, is do the tutorial.  At the end of that, you should have some money, a new ship and some skills.  The game should also point you towards three NPCs that can give you further training.  Also, always keep in mind that if your ship blows up, it is not the end of the world.  It took me playing through three trials to finally get that through my head.  Otherwise, you're pretty much free to do whatever you feel like doing, weather that be mining, mission running, or trying to work your way towards the power to chill in 0.0 space.

I would recommend that for when you want to learn more about the game, or if you are honestly stuck.
I think that the tutorial does a good job of teaching you how the game works; then showing you where to go.

Also, your good friends in the Etch Public channel are always willing to help.

-edit- sorry, i thought you linked to the main page of the eve wiki. "The basics" is prolly a good place to learn more.
This game is great I don't even have to play it.
Attempt to join goonfleet, make repeated remarks about how you are not an SA goon, report back on how things go

It's nice if you have a busy schedule, you don't have to grind out 8 billion murlocks to get 6 experience points.
that said, some people prefer the grinding style of most MMO's. I guess it's just preference

Goonfleet is not recruiting
The only way you can get into goonfleet is if you are an SA member
if you try to join w/o being a regular, you will get killed or scammed
