As per Demons request, I am posting to make sure everyone knows beta is up.
"Minecraft Beta
I just updated the client and the server to Minecraft Beta 1.0

* Working server-side inventory! Finally! (And as a result of that, a whole pile of bugs and issues got fixed)
* Made SMP servers save chunks way less often in most cases. Chunks don’t resave if they got saved in the last 30 seconds
* Moving too far away from a container, or having it blow up, closes the inventory screen
* Fixed /kill
* Introduced leaf decay again. It acts differently from before
* You can now throw eggs
* On a whim, added super exclusive clan cloaks for Mojang Employees
* .. and something else, which is even more rare"

Notch didnt mention it, but items now have rollover text with their name.
I was wondering what changed.
Also: Server instant-crash.

Demon hasn't gotten a chance to update the server to beta yet since he's at work.

No excuse.

Not hard to make a remote trigger script to kill the server, wget the new server, overwrite the old one and restart.

game is broken on osx apparently

Not really. Played it just fine a few hours ago after beta came out on it.

There's also a mac partition on that thing as well. I only touch the mac side at school, windows side at my parents, then just use my tower at home.
So can we actually get to the Nether in SMP now?
Notch still hasn't fixed nether. But in probably an hour (if demon's timezone is what i think it is) demon is going to install the update and put up a nether-only map until the mods we use are updated.

I'm not paying $65 a month to give you guys a minecraft server. If I could count on and expect at LEAST half that every month (so I pay what I have been for the last year) then I would have kept running it, but I learned my lesson on counting on a community for donations monthly, a long time ago. I was literally IRL jaw-dropped when I netted almost $200 from brb.u donations to keep my server going while I'm not financially able to do it, but that would not last indefinitely.

The javascript server is so ridiculously shody in terms of performance, it necessitates at least a dual core plan from NFO. (If the server was coded properly in a not retarded scripting language, I could run it on what I have now) I wish Notch would just face the facts and redo the fucking thing in NOT javascript because it will never get better, ever. It will get worse and worse. (See current notch blog about a sudden "severe performance reduction")

Here's a fun fact: my old school 1.2GHz Celeron server here at home with a gig of RAM will run a CS:S or TF2 32 slot server with 32 bots, and still have room left over on the CPU.

That box can not run the minecraft server - It simply kills the CPU.

Also, I was being facetious about demon being @ work is no excuse, hey0 can't update his shit the instant Notch updates the server, my server would have been down or similarly incapacitated until hey0 updates, just like demons.

Fixed that for ya.
Java != JavaScript
JavaScript copied the name from the up and coming Java when it was created.
