Now I gotta go buy a new HDD. Why couldn't the old one survive the summer? WHYYYY? Now I can't play TF2 for like 4 days while the fucker ships. Goddddaaamnit.

Anyone else get that joyous clicking of doom lately? It is one SCARY sound. At least it is easier to diagnose than dead memory.
Memtest does a fine job of checking for dead memory. Dead hard drives are of a problem for me. I've had a few this year die. Sad
Yeah, well, I DIDNT THINK TO RUN MEMTEST UNTIL I RULED OUT EVERY OTHER OPTION. Mainly because my memory was expensive to replace. And I wanted a 500gb HDD on that computer Sad  NOPE, instead, I wasted money on memory. I LIKE PHYSICAL CLUES.

We should hold a wake for dead hard drives. Burn them on a pyre and shed a single tear.
Two words, viking funeral.

Pfft, It survived for like 5 years. I am not complaining. Was a shitty western digital drive anyways. Seagate is so much bettaaar.

WD isn't bad at all, a little noisy compared to seagate but quality drives. Just look out for Maxtor, I know someone took over Maxtor since the last time I bought a drive but I forgot what company.

Budr

I'd guess East India Trading Company from the quality.

I haven't slept in 20 hours (anyone in IRC would know I love sleep more than anything), don't blame me if I'm not funny anymore.

Sounds like you need a backup drive.
What you need is a RAID6 nas like what I have sitting behind me.
Sure, the 6x 750gb drives are a little noisy. And you loose two drives to redundancy....

I had 250GB Seagate 7200.10 die on me in April. Well, actually, it reincarnated several times; I could fix it very temporarily by reformatting and installing my programs again. But reinstalling Windows once a week is not fun at all, and eventually it got to the point where it simply wouldn't even get past the BIOS splash screen. Fuck hard drives. Solid state for the win!

It's mostly TV shows and movies. It beats cable and I have scripts that automatically queue up new episodes of shows I watch.
It was about $1800 for the whole nas, including mobo, cpu, rack-mount case, psu, video, dual-gigE nics, HDDs, shipping and taxes.

Find me a 250gb solid state and we'll see Tongue I have a solid-state laptop, it's nice and all but at 4gb and the write speed of a 5,400 rpm drive is killing me.
