Sony's Zipper just announced MAG (Massive Action Game) that features up to 256 player online play...

please..please..discuss.
PS3 only. No?
Massive Packet Loss
Massive Framerate Absence

Planetside had even more players at a time. I can't say I'm colored excited.

Little Big Planet is the only thing PS3 has that is interesting to me.

Was just about to mention Planetside, unless you are charging users monthly get ready for some MASSIVE bandwidth and server bills.

MMO + Console = Insta-Fail

Yes, but Planetside is a PC game, it has RPGesque aspects, and it features mechplay. This is in the console market and it's a straight up shooter.Knowing Zipper it will be Socomesque TPS. And if anyone can pull of something like this it is definitely Zipper.

Sony fucked up planetside, they can and likely will, fuck this up as well.

Also FPS on a console, ect ect.  Tongue

Edit: Forgot, PS looked, even on release, not that great graphically, if they try to "pull out all the stops" graphically, its not going to play well. If you ever played PS and knew what things like draw distances, turning off flora, warping (SURGILES *shakes fist*), people going through walls, a whole crowd appearing in front of you at once, then you know what I'm talking about.
PS Recommended Specs
Windows 98/2000/ME/XP
Pentium III 1.6 GHz or greater
512 MB RAM
Direct3D compliant video card with 64MB+ RAM
DirectX 8.1 compatible sound card
Broadband Internet connection
3.5 GB hard drive space
DirectX 8.1 or greater

With specs like that I can see how shitty it must of played, but you've gotta remember how much technology has advanced since 2003. If they are building a game around the specs of the PS3 then I can see how likely they are to pull this off.

Also, you have to remember that this is a Zipper development. Not Sony Online.
im not gonna pass judgement on it until I see it running

This is going to be some serious fucking micspam. If you thought one or two 8 year olds was bad... Also, good luck getting a sqyad of typical PS3 owners to work together!

Then any semblance of organization breaks down immediately and you just have 256 people running around like idiots.

Why planetside didn't suffer from this as much was because for high ranking people you could /msg everyone on the continent or server from your faction. Also larger guilds/clans (like 200+ members) had MASSIVE segmented teamspeak servers. You divide it up into like 10 rooms and have a leader in each channel that converses between channels.
This interview clarifies things.

Meh, concept sounds cool, but there are a lot of flaws with it. We shall see though.
