Anyone wanna play a Boatmurdered style game?  All the cool kids are doing it.  Basically one person starts it, plays for a year, and then hands it off to the next person.  And if you haven't played DF before you automatically fail.

Even if you're not interested in playing read the Boatmurdered story.  It's the funniest game story I've ever read.
Im in.  I have to get back to playing Dwarf fortress though.  All those updates really throw me off.
So no one wants to but us two?  Laym.  Maybe I'll just create a community fortress where I name everyone after people here and post the story.
Go for it :V.

I tried to play it, failed miserably. I can't play Nethack either. I just suck at games with a huge number of keyboard commands like those :I
I despise games that need their own college courses to play. :V

However, I'm trying to learn this one.

Some people just don't want to think.  Although I do agree that Dwarf fortress does require a lot of research to get it all running but once you do it becomes as easy as breathing.
ffffffffff. Damn your eyes Esch. I was having fun >:C.

But...the location I have has NO trees. Plenty of water at least. Guess I gotta wait for a caravan, huh? *sets off to build a fuckton of stone trade goods*
bump for Surf
I just tried it and I likes it.  Crazy ass game is crazy, the depth of things you can do in this game is unreal.  May explain why the graphics are stuck in ASCII though.  I'd recommend one of eschatos' pretty tilesets.
Link to the story? I'm not good with computer.

[edit] Nvm, thought your first link was an explanation on how to play, and its actually a narrative of wtf is going on in the game they're passing around. [/edit]
hard to play Sad

I highly recommend this one.  You can actually see everything that's going on without knowing what all the symbols mean, and it's really pretty.  Dunno if it works on macs, but it's easy to use on PC.

It does look like that.
I dun downloaded that to put on my Netbook :V
For Mac users:

go here. http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/dev_now.html Scroll down, download the 01/09 Mac-native version of DF. Unzip it and place it in its own folder. Now, take the graphical edition you have right there, and overwrite 01/09's /data/init folder, /data/art folder, and /raw/graphics folder with the Mike Mayday edition versions of those. Don't paste anything else- the .exe, the dwarfmanager folder, especially not any of the .dlls or other files.

now, open the terminal and run "sh df" from the folder, and it should work. Whatever that means, I don't have a Mac. Toady says that how one gets the Mac version working though.

This should give you a native Mac version of 40d9, the latest Dwarf Fortress, with Mike Mayday's tileset and init settings.
The tile set actually makes it a lot more enjoyable.  I'm working on not messing up my 3rd fortress.

That's a really good startup tutorial for your first game.
Wrote up a little piece on Spectacle Rock about my last month playing this game.  I blame you guys.
