We had stuff like that when I was with Customs and Revenue, used for searching for both illicit files and for hidden tax files.
They didn't run live tho, they were either bootable CDs or host OSs.

Anyways, I saw this a few days ago and am currently giving it a whirl. It's kind of neat, and I rather fancy it so I thought I'd pass it along:

Portable apps are pretty sweet, I haven't looked into them that much but it would even be more awesome if they made these contain binaries for windows, linux and mac os x while still sharing all the settings. (Only when these apps have versions for that OS of course)
