Very good point. Sorry guys, but I decided to bring this thread back on topic by deleting the pointless posts. Let the cool software suggestions recommence!

Great, now my post doesn't make any sense
I bring you MLAB, from the minds at Google: http://www.measurementlab.net/
There is a bunch of useful benchmark and tools geared for your network connection.
Take a look around.

We had stuff like that when I was with Customs and Revenue, used for searching for both illicit files and for hidden tax files.
They didn't run live tho, they were either bootable CDs or host OSs.

I know somewhere someplace someone mentioned trying to build themselves some rescue disks, software disks, etc etc. I don't remember who or where that was (though I think it was zane). Anyways, I saw this a few days ago and am currently giving it a whirl. It's kind of neat, and I rather fancy it so I thought I'd pass it along:

Portable apps are pretty sweet, I haven't looked into them that much but it would even be more awesome if they made these contain binaries for windows, linux and mac os x while still sharing all the settings. (Only when these apps have versions for that OS of course)

Print a form, write letters, scan it, and then you have a font made by your hand.
If you screwed with this, post it and let's see who has the worst handwriting.
