I decided to move on campus this year and it seems like my university blocked the ports that Steam and IRC uses. So you won't be seeing much of me until I can figure out a work-around or something. Any suggestions would be appreciated  Wink. See you, space cowboys.
Hax!
Yes, someone get this man a something.........I know nothing about this.  I will continue to cheer for you on the sidelines.
Why?  Does your university hate fun?
Talk to your IT guy.  Legitimate network use shouldn't be blocked, and there might be a way around it.
Well with IRC at least, there are several ways to get around it. You could always SSH into a different machine, and IRC from their. Unless they're blocking default ports for ssh and the like, you're gold (you can change to ports too, so no reason you can't IRC with a little effort). I'm sure someone can setup an account up for you so you can IRC.

But yea, the ports for Source games cannot be changed, and that's straight from Valve. Sad
That is the worst university ever.
Failure. I'd give you my school's network if I could. 2Mb connection FTCMFW.

I luh you cheese. Come back to us.

as someone who worked in university IT: You're fucked unless you get a work around yourself.

I'm gonna bet that if it's a public university: no one, who a student can get ahold of, will know why those ports are blocked, and have even less of an idea who can unblock them

Private school: they're really not gonna give a fuck.

Also, why on earth did you move on campus if you were living off campus before?

Legitimate network use is a fairly ambiguous term under these circumstances. When I was living in halls at university, we had to sign a usage policy that essentially banned any non-educational use. Luckily, my brother let me tunnel out to a box at his work for torrenting but the point is that the institution is providing the access for their students and are perfectly within their rights to block a service such as Steam that is clearly non-academic.
@FuckDuck:
Yeah I could try ssh into the gaming PC I left at home ( :'( :'( :'( :'( ), that might work. I know that some of the web courses let the students use ssh to upload stuff onto the student web servers, so that might work.

@Crow:
I moved on campus because I was living at home (i.e. my parents house), which was in driving distance of the university, and decided I needed a change of pace.

For IRC, try using www.mibbit.com. I'm able to circumvent my work's firewall and blocked ports through it so it might work for you. Worth a shot.

As for TF2.. Find an internet cafe nearby. I recommend Panara.

Yay! That seems to work. Now I just have to figure out how to get steam to work.
