This was good for me having not played the originals.

The originals are amazing and the best PC-RPGs hands down. Ive been trying to find reviews and so far the only one let loose so far is an advance copy of the sweedish version of PC Gamer. Bethesda isn't releasing a demo and is not letting sites put reviews out until release day. Two things that do not bode well Sad

Well it seems the Xbox Magazine gave it a 10/10 but you can't really trust an "Official Magazine". They just have to make sure they rate it higher than the PS3 one so people will say "Well I suppose the 360 version is superior". I'm sure no matter what the reviewers' thoughts are overall they won't be too bad. Average across the board would have to be a 7 at minimum most likely.

Also, seeing part of this retrospective (video is downloading slowly on wireless right now) has encouraged me to play the first two. Though I'll be playing Three first so I can enjoy it. I'm sure playing the supposedly superior One and Two first would spoil my enjoyment of Three.
Plus they're not comparing it to the first two, most likely. :-\
Dear God this video is spoilerific. Stopping.

Edit: Is Fallout 1 or 2 better or shall I play both?

Play one first, one has a better story and villain overall. Two has a better and more expansive world. Both 1 and 2 have lots of cultural references, dark humor, and heavy sarcasm, matched only in my opinion by Portal.

The story in 1 does directly tie into 2.
Don't lie to yourself about the reviews, the game is going to score high across the board regardless, it's very rare a high profile title doesn't, and even rarer when it's got a big name attached to it.

Don't be retarded, Sonic has been releasing shitty poorly reviewed games for YEARS now, and Guitar Hero has been well on it's way down ever since the freshness of the genre wore off and it was passed to Neversoft.  I'm talking about games/developers that have standing series of high rated games.  Far Cry 2 got universal 80-90 range scores, and as far as I can tell, the game is a mediocre jumbled mess.
How many hours would I expect to sink into Fallout 1 and 2? Not to do every single thing, but just get through it and get most of the enjoyment out of it. Smile

20 - 30 apiece, depends on how much you fall back on gamefaqs or what type of character you make.

IMO the best three tag skills to pick would be small guns, energy weapons, and your choice of speech or steal.

I take it focusing on charisma and luck, and generally trying to avoid combat is the hard and long way to beat the game?

Heh, one thing I thought was great about 1 & 2 that will not be in 3...having a low intelligence makes you talk like an idiot. Having higher intelligence gives you more dialogue options as well as 'bigger words' to go with them.
Luckily my first time through of fallout 2 I put points into energy weapons every level since it was t my tag skill.  You'll have a bitch of a time without it.

Oh and I would pick science as well if you can fit it in.  It's really convenient to nearly have access to everything technical in the fallout world

Defiantly harder, you cant make it through without killing anything, but you can make it through without killing any Humans, in 2 you have to kill at least one person that is related to the story. However the rest is up to you entirely, again, tough, but not impossible, if you wanted to do a smooth talker Id go with a high luck, intelligence, and charisma, for tag skills take speech, small guns or energy weapons, and barter or steal.
My character has maxed out luck, and decent charisma.  The game gets easier when you almost never get hit.Â
