I think Vista gets more flack than it deserves IMO, there are very valid points about it not being a good OS, but some of the hate is unnecessary. If you are using the 64 bit version with newer hardware its great. If you are using an older machine you should probably use Unbuntu or some other linux distro depending on what you plan to do with the box.

This.  Vista's release and progress has gone infinitely better than XP did.  Remember back when XP was released the number of people clammoring for 98 SE and the new critical patch every other day?  Yeah.  Most vista problems, in my opinion, are caused by one of two things.  First, people seriously think they can reliably run it on old computers.  Yeah, I've seen people try to run it with 1 gig of ram and then complain it sucks.  3 gigs of Ram and at least some kind of dual core processor should be the real minimums.  Then the other problem is that OEMs like Dell and whatnot are releasing "Vista Ready" computers with Vista installed.  Problem is that the computers suck a mountain of ass and look a lot like the computers I just mentioned.  So of course Vista runs like crap.

SP1 fixed most of the glaring problems and SP2 should be even better.  Basically, it just comes down to the fact that it's a decent OS, it's just also a bloated pig.  It gets the job done but needs more than it really should, but the functionality is worth it, especially with the small expense of making a comp actually run it well.

I dunno much about Vista, but if it really requires all that then it definitely deserves the flak it's getting... I can understand a dual core, but 3GB of RAM? Really??

2 gigs is plenty, if you try to run it with 1 gig and don't disable all the flashy features it chugs, the laptop I got for my masters had 1 gig of ram and it ran slow, until I bumped it up to 2 gigs then it ran just fine.

I generally apply the following rule to people who bitch...

Vista - 2 gigs
XP - 1 gig
98/2000 - 512
95 - 256

The thing is, that's roughly what people would recommend for each iteration of windows. Yes, you can run XP with less than a gig, but do you really know anyone that does?
My problem with Vista has always been the compatibility and lack thereof.  I always see all these special case fixes and issues for getting stuff to work with Vista, or they just don't at all.  That and I've never seen any compelling reason to actually move to it.  Giving reasons why something "isn't so bad" doesn't make me give a shit, I want to know why it's any good.
the integrated start menu real-time search is the only feature I really like of vista, we just got it on a new laptop at work
Hopefully it won't just be one of those "oh hey an upgrade"

I really hope it fixes some issues.
The only reason people hate vista is because of the absurd amount of negative advertising from apple.  I have yet to have a single problem with anything.

Wow.

I'm amazed you think people believe those commercials.

I stopped watching once they got off of, "I come with these features already installed" and onto, "Vista sucks now buy a mac"

I'm amazed then.

And I still think Vista's negative feedback comes from the reviews of the users. I still prefer the Mac operating system to Windows in terms of user-friendliness and ease-of-use. In terms of overall features(IE: Video games), I prefer Windows.

I wont smite, but yea, people do believe them and its pushing apple's market share with stupids and "trendy" people (not that this is all mac owners, just those that believe the commercials). The more tech savy, if they really hated vista that much, probably installed a linux distro.
