   THE BACKSTORY
  Â
Once upon a time, Way back a long time ago, when the universe consisted of nothing more elaborate than Mark Volman Team Fortress Classic. On 24 August 2007 (UTC not specified), the first "official" Friday Night Fights (FNF) post on appeared on Destructoid. The post read:
Quote:Friday Night Fights has been a weekly event here at Destructoid for a while now, but as of late, it has gone unnoticed by everyone but a small group of faithful Dtoiders.
If youâre unfamiliar with Friday Night Fights, itâs exactly what it sounds like -- a bunch of us get together over Xbox Live, PSN, etc. to play games against each other. The festivities usually start around 10:00 p.m. EST, but some of us like to jump online earlier than that.
This post is meant to be a meeting place of sorts, so post your gamertag or online name, and which games (preferably from the list above) you want to play. Have fun!
In this humble beginning, No PC games were listed. The Dtoid FNF postings continued the following week, this time with a link to the (in)famous Destructoid Steam Group. By the beginning of September, 2007, Destructoid luvrs began organizing the Steam group towards the impending release of Team Fortress 2. By 21 September 2007, Team Fortress 2 began to be listed on the FNF page.
   AN ORANGE BOX APPEARS
     Â
At the release of the Orange Box, Dtoiders continued to use the Steam group to gang together for FNF.
   AND SO IT BEGINS
     Â
On 19 October, 2007 FNF had a dedicated TF2 server. However, it was at first a humble abode, little more that a toaster that St. CaffeinePowered would log into from his laptop. Â On 5 November, 2007, a permanent server was born.
Old Schoolers. "@luca ever screen shot I have of is one of you getting stomped :x"
Useless, Old Man, Deep throat Kor soon pitched in some moose nickels to keep the server in operation for the coming year. In December, the user-id plugin was added to reserve slots. (I got reply #26. In before Vandam and Jorge. That's what she said.)
February 2008 - The phrase "all jorge" jumps the shark.
       WHAT's OUR NAME, FOOLS?
  Â
By the end of March 2008, these here forums were up and running as tf2.scottygrayskull.com. During Arpil, the greatest minds woudl gather to think of a better name for the forums Server #2 came online in April-May, and was the original bearer of the "brbuninstalling" server name. Server #1 would follow suit and bear the BRBU name by Mid-May, after the great FNF kerfuffle with that other dtoid server.
comments from Rummy
-this is a work in progress. if folks add good stuff below, I will fill it in.
-that said, sorry if I left anything out. this is more time consuming than I thought when I started
-Part of this little history lesson is to give accurate context to the current discussions of "who we are" "where we are going" "what are we / should we be playing" and "should we grow, and if so, how?" I'm trying to keep this history thread mostly factual, and keep my comments on the "where are we going" stuff to the other threads.
