I'm playing Resistance 2, a decent game.  It's fun but not mind blowing.  I'm on normal cuz I just want to get through it, see what I was missing and move on.  I get to this place.  5 huge fuckers with missile launchers in a park.  The park is surrounded by a road with cars, cars that explode.  The only wall is super low.  There is no cover system, you can duck that's it.  The only weapons they give you are a machine gun and a shotgun.  Any direct hits by flying cars or the explosions are instant kills.

Now at this point this isn't skill, this is luck.  It took me over a dozen times before everything went right and I could make it to the next check point.  Now I'm all for challenges and the sense of accomplishment you get.  But I've been noticing way too many games take the lazy way out and give you some crazy ass challenge with no variety of solutions and let it all boil down to how lucky you get.
Hehe, you just gave me the perfect lead in to whore my new article: http://www.spectaclerock.com/2009/02/26/...hese-days/

Yea this too.  "Hey we spent all this time making these levels lets make people run them at least twice"

So many decent games go to shit because of things like this.
I'm guessing you haven't played any retro games in awhile huh?

With the retro games worth playing at least you knew what you were doing wrong.  I agree with Zargon's article completely.
Im sick of games doing too many cheap things to make them easier

Check points every 10 feet
Regenerating health
Tripping over health/ammo
No consequence for dying
ect.
I like games that you can play straight through without dieing if you play smartly.
me.

in other news, i'm sick of birthdays. expect no happy birthdays from me, forever!
pff i beat RE2 superhuman in 5 hours, and that landed me a nice gold trophy Tongue (only died 3 times, all at the damn chicago level...i hate that one)
its not a hard game you just gotta take advantage of keeping a distance.
For that part i ran around the park where the cars were and the guys were to slow to keep up, i would stop and shoot every now and then

Halo

I guess it's what you meant?
I think games should be easy, but for the right reason. Not easy as in, "Holy crap this is boring" but as in it flows naturally. Just look at Portal! It was an easy game, but it just mixed in so nicely that no one bothered to whine about it.
Yeah that's pretty much it.  Games now have severely reduced penalties for death, so they take it as a free pass that the game no longer has to be well balanced either.  Regenerating health especially is terrible, because it takes any of the variety of how you may have to play through certain situations, depending on how much life you have left and where potential health could be.  Now you just either die or you don't, because if you don't, you'll be perfectly fine five seconds later.  I think it's really killed "level design" in FPS games a lot, which is just a joke now.

Also CoD (past the first one) is a far worse offender than Halo, and I hate the way the games are designed as a result

Somebody doesn't play hardcore. CoD4 is actually pretty balanced in that pussies can have their regen on normal difficulty, and people who enjoy an actual shooter don't get regen and have like 30% hp on hardcore.

If you're referring to single player, I'm not positive but I think the expert difficulty is the same as multiplayer hardcore.

Yes I'm only talking about single-player, I don't play instant-kill shooty games multiplayer.  I absolutely hate their "spawn an infinite amount of enemies until you move the next checkpoint" style of gameplay, where level design amounts to nothing more than a rolling pop-up gallery of enemies.  You could make CoD a lightgun game and things wouldn't be much different.  The first CoD was hella fun though, especially the Russian campaign.
What I hate more is when companies "half-ass" a game and make it extremely short and easy.  Then they throw all this stuff at you about "beating all the mini games to get the true ending" or "unlocking expert mode after you beat the game" and other unlockables.

At my old age of 25 I don't have time to sit and play the same game 5 or 6 times, going through the same dialogue and story, just to get a extra snippet of video.

Games that come to mind that have done this:

Kingdom Hearts
Megaman Battle Networks (1 and 2 were awesome, the rest were shit afterwards)

I know there are more but I am drawing a blank on them
stop playing first person shooters for single player? 90% of them are just tacked on at the end.

Seriously?  I only play FPS for single player.  If I want multi I go to TF2.  Games that try to do both fit the whole "jack of all trades master of none"
Figure out how to do even cheaper stuff. AI pathing/intelligence is still miles back. You should be able to trick them.
