all good films.
Gettysburg (all 4+ hours of it)
Saving Private Ryan
Sands of Iwojima
Zulu

Honorable Mention:
Band of Brothers - Because its a series and not a movie Sad
Apocalypse Now and Full Metal Jacket
Definitely not the best by any stretch of the imagination, but TAPS is noteworthy at the least because it predicted the level of crazy that Tom Cruise would eventually reach.

This
windtalkers? lol jesus christ you have no taste Sad

full metal jacket and saving private ryan
IMO Full Metal Jacket was good for the first 30-45 minutes, after that it was nothing noteworthy. Saving Private Ryan and Apocalypse Now were great films throughout.

Surprised Mr Grey didn't mention Fahrenheit 9/11 and the War On Terror  8)
Not really into war films. 300 is probably the closest to the genre amongst my favourites. I'll second Caff's shout for Band of Brothers though, that was ace. Although, weirdly enough, I hated Saving Private Ryan.

Band of Brother's, though not technically a movie. It's prolly the best there is.
Apocalypse Now
Saving Private Ryan
Letters from Iwo Jima/Flags of Our Fathers
Band of Brothers
The Wind the Shakes the Barley
Dr. Strangelove (Cold War)

Does Lord of the Rings count?

Only if we are doing a list of the 'best movies about people walking'  :Smile
Metal Gear Solid 4 *rimshot*

My favs:
Apocalypse Now
Patton
The Longest Day (Which has Sean Connery as a Scottish bagpiper)
Bridge Over the River Kwai
Have any of you even seen Kelly's Heroes?
I'm glad there is a lot of appreciation for the BoB. I love that series. And if you don't already know, another series by exec producers Tom Hanks and Spielberg is coming out on HBO later this year called "The Pacific" It covers the lives of three marines and battles of Pacific arena including: Peleliu, Iwo Jima, Guadalcanal, and Okinawa.

Does this count? If so, I agree.

This is great too. Also....

The Great Escape.

Star Wars?

Just kidding.  My vote would have to go towards Platoon.

Dr. Strangelove (Cold War)

I'm going to go ahead and say it does count. There's a scene where the Earth succumbs to nuclear armaggedon, for Chrissakes.
Does Forrest Gump count?

Pretty awesome movie.
