January 1st, 1999

Commander Versus

The story of X-COM begins in 1998. The initial plot centers around increased reports of UFO sightings. Tales of abduction and terrorism by the unknown aliens become widespread. The nations of the world come to perceive this as a threat and attempt to form their own forces to deal with this, such as Japan's Kiryu-Kai; these forces fail miserably, the Kiryu-Kai not intercepting a single UFO in its five months of operation. On December 11, 1998, representatives from some of the most powerful nations in the world meet in Geneva, Switzerland, to discuss the issue. From this meeting was born the Extraterrestrial Combat Unit — X-COM, led by Commander Versus.


The first base is established in New Mexico; its name will be Black Mesa.

The first eight soldiers are:

ScottyG
Caffeine
Kor

Ianki
Trace

All of them are onboard SKYRANGER-1.

Current facilities:

3 Hangars
1 Small Radar System
1 Living Quarters
1 Laboratory
1 Workshop
1 General Stores
1 Access Lift

Construction begins today on a new Living Quarters, a new General Stores, and a new Alien Containment facility in Black Mesa.

22 new scientists have been hired.
If I were commander I would ditch one of those alien containment facilities and build another lab.  Tech comes before alien containment.  Only when your soldiers are good enough to subdue a high ranking officer should you have a containment center.

From the journal of Versus:

January 3, 1999:

Not much is happening, besides the continuing facility construction. Those Avalanche Launchers arrived today; technicians are installing them on INTERCEPTOR-1 and INTERCEPTOR-2.

January 4, 1999:

22 new scientists arrived today and were assigned to help the original 10 scientists research Medi-kits.

January 7, 1999:

Medi-kit research is complete; consider yourself lucky if you survive long enough to have one used on you.

Saturday, January 9th, 1999:

Big day today; HeK picked up our first UFO this morning to the west of British Columbia. It's small, but we can take it out. INTERCEPTOR-1, piloted by Tragic Hero, was dispatched. The UFO was shot down over the Pacific Ocean, just over an hour after it was detected. This easy success raised everyone's morale.

Surf, I bought the game on Steam, so I made a new game, and I decided to write about it in this thread; no one's died yet Tongue

January 11th-19th, 1999:

General Stores and Alien Containment finished construction during these days; Motion Scanner and various laser research was also finished during these days.

January 20th

Our second UFO was detected early this morning around 7AM by HeK, just northeast of Mexico City, heading east. Hopefully Tragic Hero can get to it in time. En route, HeK discovered that the UFO landed at about 8:30AM...Luinbariel will pilot the SKYRANGER-1 air transport to the UFO's landing site in the Yucatan Peninsula. The ride was uneventful, but the atmosphere was tense: the first real battle was about to  begin.

MISSION 1: UFO LANDING IN THE YUCATAN PENINSULA

Caffeine and Kor each get a Heavy Cannon, while Trace, ScottyG, ainmosni, Dave, copulatingduck, and Ianki are armed with rifles.

Turn 1: ScottyG is the first one out of the transport; he takes two steps outside before being shot at, but the aliens missed. He walks a bit further and is missed again. Caff dashes outside with his Heavy
Cannon to help Scotty, who has just spotted an alien in the darkness. Scotty takes aim and fires a burst, killing an alien. ainmosni, the next one out, spots the UFO to the right, which is surprisingly close.
He runs over to a tree and takes cover before looking around, then dashing to the next tree; an alien spots him and fires, but misses. Kor is the fourth one off the transport, and goes to assist ainmosni,
but doesn't see anything. copduck, Dave, and Ianki get off uneventfully and follow Kor and ain; this group will enter the UFO; Trace, Caffeine, and Scotty will go around the north end and clear any aliens up there.

Turn 2: Alpha squad, composed of copulatingduck, Dave, Ianki, ainmosni, and Kor, continues around the southwest of the UFO. Ianki and copduck hug the UFO's wall, while Dave, ain, and Kor search
for the alien that shot at ain. Delta squad, composed of Trace, ScottyG, and Caffeine ascend the small hill north of the UFO, but don't find anything.

Turn 3: Delta splits up, but doesn't find anything; Trace gets farther east than the others and takes cover behind a tree while waiting for Caffeine and Scotty to catch up. Kor, Ianki, and copduck  approach, while ain and Dave are still searching.

Turn 4: Yup, Dave and ain are still searching. Ianki, Kor, and copduck are almost at the UFO's hatch; Trace is still waiting for Scotty and Caffeine. No one has seen a second alien yet.

Turn 5: copduck, Kor, and Ianki stack up against the door, while Trace, Caffeine, and Scotty move southeast around the UFO, now that Caffeine and Scotty have caught up with Trace. Dave and ain continue searching, and in the darkness, ain spots an alien. He fires a burst, hitting the alien once, but it's still up and returns fire. ain dodges the alien's fire and calls out to Dave, who hurries over, sees the alien, and fires off two bursts; once again, the alien is hit, but it's still up. The alien once again misses its shots.

Turn 6: ainmosni fires a bit more carefully, and guns down the alien in semi-auto mode. With its death, everyone is pretty sure that the only remaining aliens are inside. Meanwhile, Ianki, Kor, and copduck go into action: Ianki opens the door and immediately sees an alien. He positions himself to the side of the door and unloads a burst on the alien, killing it instantly. The three of them move in and prepare to enter the other half of the UFO. The other five wander around outside; Trace goes off by himself to the east, where he is surprised to see an alien watching him. Luckily, Trace still has enough time to fire a burst at the alien, killing it. An alien emerges from a door during the aliens' turn, but Kor is on guard and kills it, ending the mission.

Aftermath:

No one knew what to expect, but everyone performed well; surprisingly, not a single person was killed. Many alien artifacts were recovered, including a UFO power source, 2 UFO navigations, 35 alien alloys, and 50 units of Elerium-115, as well as five alien corpses, which are sure to be of interest to our scientists.

Trace – promoted to Sergeant.

ScottyG, Kor, ainmosni, Dave, Ianki – promoted to Squaddie.

Tragic Hero and Luinbariel return with INTERCEPTOR-1 and SKYRANGER-1; research begins on Alien Alloys; 20 Avalanche missiles have been purchased for the INTERCEPTOR crafts; 18 more scientists have been hired, for a total of 50.

January 23rd, 1999:

Word from above informs me that Buenos Aires is being attacked by aliens. I am faced with a difficult decision: it will be a very hard fight there, and I will be surprised if I take four or fewer casualties; moreover, my soldiers are equipped with rather basic weaponry...but, on the other hand, that region supplies quite a bit of money, so it's hard to just ignore them...In the end, I decide to help them, but only after two more recruits have arrived, and the mission will be a disaster if we go at night.

Also, the 18 new scientists arrived today, filling the first laboratory.

January 24th, 1999:

Fuck, apparently I only have one day to get to terror sites or something. Oh well.

January 26th, 1999:

Two recruits arrived today, Eschatos and Karth, bringing the soldier total to 10.

January 28th, 1999:

Our third UFO has been spotted; it's already landed in North Dakota. SKYRANGER-1 is prepped, and all 10 soldiers get onboard.

MISSION 2: UFO LANDED IN NORTH DAKOTA

MISSION 2: UFO LANDED IN NORTH DAKOTA

Caffeine gets an Auto Cannon, Kor and Trace each get a Heavy Cannon, while Karth, Eschatos, ScottyG, ainmosni, Dave, copulatingduck, and Ianki get rifles. Trace is responsible for the single Medi-kit, since he is the highest-ranking soldier.

Turn 1: Daylight missions are a lot easier than night missions, as everyone can see much farther. First off the transport as Scotty; once again, he is shot at as soon as he begins exiting. He hops off of the ramp and unloads a burst, hitting the alien once. The alien returns fire, but misses. Scotty bursts again, hitting the alien twice, but it's still up. Kor walks down the ramp and fires his Heavy Cannon once, missing. Everyone gets off, and...no one can hit the fucking thing. There is a line 6 people wide, and no one kills it. The alien returns fire, killing Caffeine instantly, the first X-COM casualty.

Turn 2: Dave is the first one to go, and fires two bursts, killing the alien. The rest begin to explore the surrounding area; there are several small buildings around SKYRANGER-1 and the landed UFO...good places for aliens to hide. During the aliens' turn, one emerges, fires a potshot at Eschatos which almost hits him, and hides again.

Turn 3: Karth finishes clearing a small farm building, for horses or something, with ainmosni right behind him. ain looks through a shed next to it, which appears to be clear. Eschatos walks towards where the alien was hiding, but doesn't see anything. Kor clears half of an apple orchard, with Ianki as backup. Trace and Scotty head northeast of the landing site to check out a barn or something.

Turn 4: Trace and Scotty don't see anything in the northeast two-story building through the windows, so they investigate the other half of the orchard, which is also clear. copduck approaches the UFO's door, but decides to continue checking out the four-building complex to the south/southeast. Most of the map has been cleared by now; only the UFO and three small buildings have yet to be completely cleared. On the aliens' turn, an unseen alien shoots Eschatos twice in the back through a window, killing him.

Turn 5: Ianki, Trace, and Scotty start heading over to the southern buildings. Karth and ain begin converging from the opposite direction. copduck rounds a corner and spots the alien who killed Eschatos. He fires his first burst, which misses terribly at a range of 15-20 feet, then another, which kills the alien. Dave and Kor stack up against the UFO's entrance.

Turn 6: Trace and Scotty continue heading towards the UFO's entrance; copduck glances around, confirming that he's cleared the area. Only one building remains, which is quickly checked out by ainmosni and Karth; everyone is now either heading for the UFO or preparing to enter. Dave is the first one in, immediately spotting an alien, which he kills it with a single shot. Kor comes in right behind him, but that UFO section has been cleared.

Turn 7: Kor bursts through the door, announcing his arrival with his sexy voice, much to the surprise of the lone alien. Kor kills the alien with a single shot from his Heavy Cannon, then walks into the main room, where he is shot at by an alien, but dodges it. Dave comes in from the other side, but doesn't see the alien until it's too late. The others continue heading towards the UFO. On the aliens' turn, the alien misses Kor again, and hides in another room.

Turn 8: Kor walks into the third room, where he shoots at the alien, but misses. The alien misses, surprise, surprise, but Kor sees a second alien and wisely decides to wait for backup from Dave and the others. On the aliens' turn, one comes out and kills Kor with a burst.

Turn 9: The loss of Kor in front of his eyes is too much for Dave to bear, so he charges in, sees both aliens, and kills them at close range with bursts from his rifle. The death of these last aliens is the end of the mission.

Aftermath:

The sudden loss of three operatives on an otherwise normal mission was tragic. No one expected the two big guys on the team to bite it this quickly, although the loss of Eschatos the rookie was not completely out of the blue. 6 alien corpses and many artifacts were recovered, including: 1 UFO Power Source, 2 UFO Navigations, 35 alien alloys, and 50 units of Elerium-115.

No one was promoted.

Also I'm happy to be named pilot of the interceptor.  Let's just hope I don't get sent out against any large crafts anytime soon
