Re: Build Chief a Computer - KarthXLR - 08-09-2009

You really don't need to buy a new one. You might want to buy a new graphics card, but otherwise, you have a pretty solid rig there.

Re: Build Chief a Computer - zaneyard - 08-09-2009

that's a pretty old athlon there

Re: Build Chief a Computer - copulatingduck - 08-10-2009

Computer Case - This case kind of rapes, I have one and the airflow and tool-less design are superb. It makes me feel like a raper, I never leave home without it. I guess I could almost understand if you want to be cheap and keep your old case, but nothing in that machine is worth keeping if you're looking to upgrade at this point. Keep it around the house as an old beater-ass workhorse/NAS/Pr0n archive/etc

Processor - I won't lie, I still haven't done my homework on i7's, they might be worth looking into at this point, but I doubt it and I'm a little drunk/tired

Mobo - IT HAS GOOD REVIEWS ON NEWEGG.CA AND IT'S NOT THE 750 CHIPSET

RAM - RAM IS RAM

GPU - TOM'S HARDWARE SUGGESTED THIS IS THE BEST CARD YOU CAN BUY IN JULY AT THE ~$160 (AMERICAN) PRICEPOINT

Sound - I honestly don't think it's necessary, motherboards come with pretty nice onboard sound as far as I can tell. If anyone else has an opinion on the matter please feel free to share Smile

Hard Drive - I doubt you need this much space. I also doubt you need me to hold your hand while you pick a hard drive Wink

Optical Drive - HOLYSHIT LIGHTSCRIBE THE TECH THAT NEVER TOOK OFF

Fans - after seeing that you listed fans among the devices you wanted suggestions on, I'm starting to wonder if you did need me to hold your hand while you picked a hard drive. Oh well. For the case I recommended, I suggest 12cm fans (OMG cm's, they actualyl use those in CA!) I'd suggest picking up 3-4 of those fans, with 2 blowing over your HDD(s), and 2 blowing into the case. You could even combine 2 of the fans with this fancy thingamabob

Or if you want to look really fucking cool (and not give that bitch of a computer the reacharound everytime you want to adjust the fanspeed), you could go with this fan/controller set (I say set because these are 3pin, the above set is 4pin) 4pac (cuz 2pac was 2 weak and controller. That controller is pretty bitching. Granted, there's probably no way you'd ever need 6 separate controllers, but when Jesus turned water into wine he didn't really need that either, and that didn't stop him

Power Supply - 700W will leave you some room to grow, and I'm bad with cables so I like the idea of modular cables. Silverstone is a reputable brand, and this power supply is 80 PLUS BRONZE CERTIFIED SO YOU KNOW WHEN YOU'RE BURNING 700W RUNNING CRYSIS ON HIGH SETTINGS YOU'RE SAVING THE ENVIRONMENT WITH ALL THAT EFFICIENCY. PLUS IT MATCHES THAT ENERGY EFFICIENT HDD I LINKED, SO COOL!

I think that's it, but I probably missed something, and if you buy all the parts and it ends up not working I'll just tell you I've made a huge mistake

Dark, Duck knows what he is talking about. I'll look over the list and double check it when i get home from work tonight.

LOVE DERAILMENT GO

Re: Build Chief a Computer - zaneyard - 08-10-2009

Good build, Duck. How much did that come out to? pretty cheap, even with the fact that .ca's prices are jacked up.

Also, I would go with the western digital blacks instead of the green teri. less platters mean less problems.
theres a 750 gig that i just bought on shell shocker right now. dunno how that works for .ca though
why is stuff more expensive on newegg.ca...

now if only my financial aid refund check would come faster, this list owns the shit.

Re: Build Chief a Computer - copulatingduck - 08-10-2009

SINCE THE OPTICAL DRIVES AND HDD ARE OEM DON'T FORGET SATA CABLES (WHOOPS)

Yea, I saw that hdd after I made this build and thought about linking it but got lazy/sobered up/fell asleep. It's a pretty sweet deal, even in Canada. Also, protip: if you just change the *.com to *.ca, newegg takes care of the rest when shopping for Canadians

edit: protip #2, troll newegg public wishlists when you want inspiration on what to buy Smile

Re: Build Chief a Computer - zaneyard - 08-10-2009

OEM doesn't come with cables? didn't know that

ehh, i'll just dump my existing HDD image onto an external, then move it onto the new one
more time, less caring.
