<@Negate> there is a simple pattern
<+Karrde> I changed my mind.  Gonna cosplay as a gay demon from hell and get negate raped instead XD
<+Caffeine`work> Karrde: Gay demon? Why would you need to cosplay just go as yourself
<+FlyingMongoose> Caffeine`work: Karrde would actually have to tone it down some.

You have your answer.

I think it's interesting how much better shmups are at actually having "oh shi-" looking bosses that are convincingly creepy and also have very apropreatly awesome soundtracks.

Perhaps a lot of the former has to do with the fact that a lot of games now a days force the whole "cinimatic" effect (dramatic cuts, lack of being able to view the scale of the boss as a whole, etc), which cheapens the effect of "scary and intimidating" by being too over the top.  Also how bosses in shmups are awesomely creative most of the time, they don't try and show everything (leaves a bit to the imagination), and are complicated beasts compared to the standard enemies in shmups that are mostly one-shot kill grunts that try to crash into you.
