i tried this fix but i was still getting the error. Do I need warhead installed as well as wars for it to work?

Nope.

What you can try is:

• Verify files on Crysis Wars. This resets the cdkey.
  
• Launch Crysis Wars and connect to a 'protected punkbuster' server. Should get an error
  
• Open regedit and browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Electronic Arts\Electronic Arts\Crysis Wars\ergc
  
• Edit the CDkey and add hypens every four characters
  
• Copy the CDKey and use it in the linked instructions. This worked for me 100% so far
  

Every time you launch Crysis Wars (NOT MWLL, which doesn't launch via steam) steam will run the installscript.vdf script and replace the registry cd key with the incorrectly formatted version, unless you edit the script to use the correct key.
