Just a theory, but maybe they train so hard he doesn't want them to overwork so they need periods of rest to recooperate. If you over work you actually start making yourself weaker.

Yeah, last three weeks have been brutal. We started our taper for Nationals (which is next friday/saturday) this week. We've been doing a lot of active recovery, and this whole weekend we're just not supposed to do anything and let our muscles rebuild and our energy come back to us.
We work to the fatigue, if not exhaustion, point nearly every day, so we need a lot of time to come back from that.

I agree with everything in the above statements except the doing nothing part.  You should be skydiving on you weekend, while drinking... and having sex, if possible.
