Vacuum Cleaner recommendations? No, seriously.

I need a new vacuum cleaner. I'm looking for an upright, with a HEPA filter, and preferably quiet (my current dirt devil thing is obnoxious). Dyson's are sexy but super expen$ive. Anyone here go shopping for one recently or have any suggestions?

Which one did you get? And how good is it, honestly? Is it very loud? I've been thinking the same thing, looking at the cost of a replacement vacuum and/or replacement bags and filters, a Dyson would seriously be my best bet. They're hideously expensive though, $500 for a vacuum cleaner wow.

I've got one at my office, they're crap. Even with the 'invisible wall' things keeping them in one room, they're not very good at actually vacuuming. They look cool, and scare the shit out of cats and dogs though.

I would not recommend a Dyson.  I have an actual vacuum cleaner store by my house and when I bought a new one I was talking to the guy for a while about the choices.  He could have sold me an expensive Dyson over the one I got but he told me that honestly Dysons are decent but overpriced and over hyped.  They also have some issues with parts of them not being sealed properly.

The one he sold me was a canister and it was the best household purchase I have ever made.  It's a Miele.  It may not be for you and if you can find a vacuum store they actually let you test them out (I tested some out it was fun).  But since most of my floors are hard the canister makes things so quick and easy to clean.  On carpets it is nice too but not as easy as hard floors.

My mom does this sort of thing for a living; she has a home cleaning service in my home town. She ends up using a tonne of different types of vacuums, whatever the client has.

She has told me before that Dyson's are not worth it and that she doesn't like them. She says it's neat the way some of them can turn around and such but that is all; other cheaper vacuums are much better.

i got one of the early ones for like, $300, it's not very loud about the same as other vacuums

but yeah, $500 is overpriced, however, i gotta say, it does its job and it does it for a hell of a long time. still havent had any major issues as of yet

When I last asked her for advice she said it's good to stick with the classic style of vacuum and to avoid the canister ones. They are generally more annoying to keep clean and, usually being upright, can be more difficult to get into various spaces. According to her you should stick with name brands and avoid uprights; go with what you know in a reasonable price range. Bag vacuums tend to be the way to go; they've been along for like 50 years, so they must be doing something right.

Yeah HeK just pointed that out to me.

For some reason I've been calling upright vacuums canister vacuums. I really don't know why... now that I think about it I don't know what I would have called an ACTUAL canister vacuum before someone said something.

For her, she wanted something that is powerful (had a dog with lots of coarse hair), lightweight (she has back problems and can't lift much), and has a HEPA filter (my mooching brother has really bad allergys). It's hella quiet to boot.

For the past four years it has performed very well.

I guess you could make a list of pro's and con's for uprights and cannisters, see where that gets you.

Canister Pro's
- lightweight
- access tight corners
- wider variety of surfaces they can be used on
- MUCH easier to use on stairs.
- variety of attachments

Canister Con's
- Purchasing new vacuum bags
- take up slightly more storage space
- no cool little light on the front

Upright Pro's
- convenient dust disposal thingy
- (usually) take up less room
- REALLY good on carpet (lololol)

Upright Con's
- very heavy and often awkward to use
- extremely annoying on stairs
- probably more expensive
- useless in tight spaces (again, lololol)
- generally less attachments and not as versatile (useless on hardwood/tile/linoleum, or at least noisy as fuck)
