I found out that the hdmi port on the 360 is blocked by the regular plug (the xbox to vga/xbox to a/v composite). So I cracked open my xbox to a/v cable plug and it turns out its full of nothing but plastic.
PLASTIC that blocks the hdmi port. And microsoft is trying to sell me a 50 dollar audio dongle with the hdmi cable.

doesn't HDMI carry audio data?

i believe it can, but most people tend not to have big fancy receivers in their homes. They just have the HDTV, some crappy surround sound system (at least it sounds better than the TV's onboard audio), and a console. so the idea is that it's more convenient to just give the audio a separate cable anyways, esp since a lot of consumers are completely and utterly bewildered with newer tech. Iirc, there was an article a couple years back that claimed something on the order of 30-40% of 360 and PS3 users had, but were not utilizing the HD in HDTV (everyman is a moran)

I don't even have surround sound, I'm not an audiophile but I do care about some quality of sound.

if you have external speakers or headphones that you can plug into your monitor the sound from the xbox will play through them since you're hooking it up through hdmi.

So I did this audio dongle hack where I basically broke apart the plastic casing. Then I realized whenever I wanted to switch monitor source so I can browse the internets while playin the 360, the 360 will simply reboot when I switch it back to hdmi.

So I looked online and it said to cut the sodder between pins 26-28 or something so I did that and it worked. Except now the volumes gone to shit and I gotta turn my speakers all the way up for it to be slightly quieter than normal.

Fucking with cabling of devices meant to work with finiky devices that may deal with encryption over said cable might be a bad idea.

That said, can you source up where you found this cable hack? There's only 19 pins on an HDMI cable, so I'm curious as to what got borked. Unless you cut the stuff on the X-Box side of the cable, then I'm a little more lost and need to look up more shit.

If you google audio dongle hack you'll come across many popular threads. And why would I hack the hdmi cable? Theres 30 pins on the a/v component cables. Thats the thing I hacked because thats the only thing that'll give me audio. Because we already went over the fact that hdmi is useless to me as a means of channeling sound.

Naturally you would realize that you need the official audio dongle because the regular cables block the hdmi port. So I just broke the plastic casing on the a/v cable and that was fine except theres a piece of sodder connecting pins 26-28 that cause a reset when you switch sources/channels. So I went and snipped that sodder off because plenty of people have done it and fixed the whole reset problem, and in fact the official audio dongle does it for you.
