So after sporting the bulky demoman costume for a while, I've decided that I'd like a "light" costume that I could wear on off days at ACEN, probably on Thursday and maybe Sunday. So I figure I could pull off an okay Quote, from Cave Story. Looks pretty easy, to be honest. Something to keep in mind is that Quote is never shown in greater detail than maybe 16-bit, so I'm going to have to go based largely off of fanart.

<- It's this guy, right here.

So here's my rundown, which I'll be updating as tonight progresses.

Body
As an almost-anime character, Quote's got a pretty slim physique. I'm probably about average, though I've been starting another lifting regimen. I'll probably shoot for high-volume low-intensity upper body exercises over the next 2 months, and then work on weight reduction as March rolls around.

As for hair, I'll just let what I have (currently medium length) grow out until ACEN. It might be a pain, but at least the Demoman cosplay I'll still be sporting won't have real constraints there. However, there is a problem. Again as an almost-anime character, Quote is never depicted with body hair at all. I'm really hoping this doesn't mean I'll have to resort to waxing my forearms or armpits.

Finally, skin tone. As a robot, Quote doesn't have a normal skin tone. Every cosplay I've seen has been of some guy of peach skin. I'm thinking about going all-out and picking up white latex body paint, though I have no experience with regards to this. Any advice?

Clothing - Currently $80 worth
Everything here's pretty ordinary.

Hat - One Two Three! Complete
Either flat peak or round peak. I'll probably get some craft foam and paint it silver for the front "metal" plate.

Headphones - ??? Complete
This is probably going to be the largest effort. I remember seeing some nice guides on making headphones for Vocaloid cosplays that my girlfriend was doing, I'll probably do something in that realm.

Scarf - One! Complete
Pretty sure I'm going with a green scarf since what little official artwork there is depicts him wearing one.

Shirt - One Two Three Four Five! Complete
Quote is more commonly depicted with a black tank top, but I'm thinking about exerting some creative control and opting for a sleeveless shirt. Doing so will save me some body paint and also lets me not worry about my chest hair being a problem.

Belt - One Two! Complete
Would you believe it, I don't have a belt. Although two of the above images depict him with brown belts, I think black would fit better visually.

Pants - One Two! In Progress
Here's a tough one. Every depiction of him uses either red jeans or red cargo pants. The former aren't really made for men, and the latter are either expensive, hard to find or have some logo on them. This is the best I could find, though I'm pretty sure it won't work since it doesn't have belt loops. Found one that works nicely.

Shoes - Already in possession Complete
Easy, just re-use my black EMT shoes from my demoman cosplay.

Polar Star - One Complete
Probably going to end up repainting a nerf or airshoft gun. My attention span is running out so I'll look more into this later.

Body Makeup - Latex? Aquacolor? idk Complete

There actually is. During the credits they show a few pictures.

If this helps even a bit. More accurate references in any case.

Forgot about those. Anyways, narrowed down some choices. The headphones are going to be the real challenge though, not even sure where to begin there.

might want to try using electronic headphones like shooters use. You can modify it to add the antennas but they'll allow you to wear them but still hear people while you're walking around. They can be pricey though.

another solution is a pair of those 1970s/80s/90s style radio headphones you see old guys wearing when they go running.

Or disassemble these: http://www.amazon.ca/Mossy-Okolona-Profi...165&sr=8-1
Slap on some bondo and sand smooth, paint.

Ordered the hat, scarf, shirt and pants. Headphones may well be constructed from pre-manufactured ones per your guy's suggestion, just seeing if there's a way I could hide the band, either by buying one that would fit under the cap or cutting it off and replacing it with flexible foam strips (which would not have great resilience). Also still looking into body latex.

Thin womens hairband, or just attach the headphones to the hat.

I could have sworn Quote's hat said "Curly" on it.

Most fanart works don't seem to have it though, and the ones that do seem to be in contention about whether it is "Curly" or "Curly Brace", although most seem to use the latter.  The original sprites were too small to show anything on his hat but I could swear that it is commented on somewhere in the game.

Hat, Belt, Scarf and Shirt arrived. Did a quick mock-up using my G35s and paper on my hat, lol

Wanted to see what it would look like white white latex body paint but just desaturating the photograph just makes it look like poop. Gonna be fun killing my armpit hair Sad

Shirt isn't gay enough.

But really it looks good.

See if you can find a custom hat place in the mall that has a 'blank' white and red cap.

There are plenty of hats of that style, but I'm going for a more metallic look so I'll probably hit a strip of craft foam with silver and do something for the "bolts".

The choice for a non-gay shirt was intentional Tongue Also, happy that based on this preliminary run, I'm already skinnier than half of the cosplayers I've seen. Still already started a regimen though, quitting now would be the baby move. Going to try vegetarianism again for a month starting spring break, gonna be fun (lost ~15 pounds last time I did that in conjunction with daily runs).

Looks nice! I love trucker hats.

As for cutting fat, I go with eating more proteins and veggies and cutting the carbs. Along with a lot of cardio + weights cuz you don't want to look scrawny.
I guess vegetarianism works too if you consume a lot of tofu :d I could never go full vegetarian as I love meat too much.
I'm also working out atm, partly for cosplay (them anorexic looking men) and partly for when I get back into sports.

Hat's done. Rather than futz with craft foam and paint, I picked up a very thin sheet of tin (thin enough to cut with kitchen shears), and jammed some thumbtacks through it! Used pliers to bend the pins on the inside of the hat and hammered it down. Downside of using thin metal is that it is gets dented very easily (note the corners).

Next up is the Polar Star. A nerf gun (Nite-finder) has been ordered, I've got a can of Krylon Blue, and some sandpaper. Will update then.

Need to hotglue it when I get back to campus, then paint the case and antennae green. Then, all I have left is white body makeup. Anyone?

Costume's done, just waiting on body paint to arrive.

loser alert

My gangly and unevenly tanned arms more or less necessitate the white body makeup. Wonder if I'll have to remove the hair on my forearms though.

Err, the armpit hair does have to go though. Jesus.
