Mobo: ASUS M4A79T Deluxe
GPU: GIGABYTE GV-R695OC-1GD Radeon HD 6950 1GB 256-bit
Main Storage: OCZ Vertex 3 VTX3-25SAT3-120G 2.5" 120GB SATA III MLC Internal Solid State Drive
CPU: AMD Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition Deneb 3.4GHz Socket AM3 140W
Power Supply: COOLER MASTER Silent Pro M600 RS-600-AMBA-D3 600W ATX12V V2.3
RAM: (8 GB) G.SKILL Trident 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Desktop Memory Model F3-12800CL8D-4GBTD
OS: Win 7 Home Premium

Few things to note. I built this back in 2009 and it worked perfect for the longest time. Went on a weekend trip with the computer turned off the entire time. Come home and it bluescreens on launch. Few reboots later and it is fine again.
List of symptoms: BIOS reset a few times, doesn't happen anymore really.
Games randomly uninstall themselves, also skype has uninstalled itself and then magically reinstalled itself after a reboot.
Google Chrome will crash often when system is unstable.
Lots of BSODs.
Often times rebooting a few times will cause my system to run stable for the rest of the night. It seems to run less stable if I'm coming home after work or if I left my computer off for a longer period of time than normal.

I used to have a 4890 in here for the graphics card, problems persisted between both graphics cards (only thing common between the two is AMD). I've reformatted several times with a few different versions of Win 7. I had it on professional for a while, now I'm on Home Premium.
I also had a WD Black 750 gb HDD as my main storage for a while before I dropped the SSD in and problems persisted with both drives.
I've also adjusted my memory timing per this page http://www.gskill.us/forum/showthread.php?t=7688

Is it possible that my mobo or power supply are causing this? I've done memtests before overnight and I've gotten clean and bad results several different times. One would think that if memory is bad, it would fail memtest every time at one point right?

Sadly, anything is possible, but it sounds like more likely to be memory. Start by reseating your components and shuffle your memory around.
Give it another overnight run with Memtest86+.

rgr I'll let that run when I can get a chance to run it as long as possible.

Have you tried reflashing your BIOS? It might be worth trying to reset your BIOS to factory default then reupdate to whatever version you're running currently or to the latest version.

The BIOS resetting itself is symptomatic of a dead CMOS battery, but I find it hard to believe a system built back in 2009 would have trouble with that.

Last time I checked Asus hadn't updated the bios beyond what version I have on the board.

Just checked my memtest and a full pass took about 8 hours with no errors.
Is there a difference hardware-wise between a computer that's been powered on for a while and one that's been turned off for a while? I could try running another memtest sometime when the system is acting funny, as last night before I ran this one it had become stable in windows.

Ok so I lied earlier it must have went through more than one pass

got home from work after letting it run for about 16 hours
[Image: nt4lxk1.jpg]
It took 8 passes to bring up an error, and made it to pass 14 without anymore after that.

This is from a little over a year ago

I'm just going to go ahead and assume that the memory is bad? Should I bother testing to see what stick (if not all) are shit? It looks like I can actually still buy the same model of RAM.

I guess I could test each stick individually during the week. Is 16 hours enough to let it go through to definitively rule the stick good or not?

If you have two sticks, it should be the second stick,
If you have four stick, it should be the third stick.

Remove said stick, rerun test.

If you pass after... wow! 17 hours.... there you go.

I have 4.
How do you know what stick it should be on? the failing address?

Wouldn't it be better for him to swap that stick to another position and see if it moves with it? If it stays in the same addresses then it could be the slot itself.

That's also what I was thinking. I'll probably do this tonight when I go to bed.

So I moved each stick one slot to the right. Ran memtest for like 18 hours and it came up with no errors. Mostly just writing it here so I remember doing it.
