WIP: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/1038...wubwub.mp3

Except I ended up changing the tempo so it's more DnB not wubwubwub.

Now realistically, what should I be doing if I like my music, but enough people say it should be more like x or y? My entire point is to not sound like x or y but to be putting some more thought/storytelling/emotion-conveying into my songs than "lol dance music". My whole point is to make music that works for getting stoned and chillaxing and thinking, but people expect it to move them because of the genres... But what about music that soothes? ???

Fuck EDM, bring back Electronica. :'(

If you haven't heard of him, look up Brian Eno, and also look for things like Psychedelic and Ambient stuff (ambient stuff is really good for relaxing):
This is a former high school buddy of mine who does ambient music using almost nothing but his guitar and certain pedals. (We had a falling out because of a crazy bitch ex girlfriend of mine, but I still support him).

Though one of them is with a band he was with at one point. I haven't heard from him in a long time though so I don't know what he's recorded recently... if anything, he kind of fell hard into the drugs for a while (and I was advised by a once mutual friend of ours to avoid contact with him because of it).

Ambient stuff is usually stuff you might hear in the background of movies and not really think about much, but without it the film might get very dry, boring, and uninteresting, but on it's own is very mellow, relaxing, but sometimes it also gets boring without the visuals (so try it with a graphic visualizer like what winamp use to have and I think there's one in iTunes now).

Also, remember the Windows 98 boot up sound? And pretty much all of those really unique sounds Windows 98 default use to have? All of that, Brian Eno...

Not 100% sure what you're asking, but I'm guessing people are making suggestions based off of what they like that also sounds close to whatever you've already made. The sounds used in that sample you linked remind me more of EDM and wubstep than anything else, so there's that. Genres exist because it's efficient to lump things into categories when you talk broadly about them, and EDM isn't exactly known to contain particularly deep or complex or pensive music. I don't know much of anything about making music, but I'd think that the first step in making music that's thought provoking or tells a story or has some sort of progression is to listen to songs and albums that have already accomplished that. See what they do and what they have to offer and then adapt that to your own goals and style.

I might have accidently a new Les Paul Standard.

Also, I whopped gramma-ma over the head and took her pre-CBS Fender Deluxe Reverb amp.
