Yeah btw, that consists of me and me.  And I don't wanna play with just me.  A central server (like #1 on TF2) lets me play with anyone in the US decently.  Also we need an 8 player server because Versus mode is awesome.

Also there is a server setup for the dToid group, and I donut know where it is, but my ping is fine to it.

What about me!? I live on the west coast and would be willing to chip in. However like wedge points out, a server somewhere central would be the best option for everyone.

I wouldn't mind contributing a couple bucks.

$12 it will be private.

I'd suggest you get everyone to chip in $12 now and pay 6-8 months so you don't have to hound people.  Then if that server gets too busy you can get a second round for a shorter time frame 2-4 months (chooly, maybe me and whoever else can kick in later).  So then we will have 2-3 good (theoretically) 12 man servers and mine available for like FNF or special nights or whatever.  I'm including ains in the good server list cuz im sure hes got better bandwidth and box running on his end.

Thoughts?  This way we got one server paid till about when the game will start losing its lifetime (6-8 months) and another server possibly for the beginning busyness and we can just let them expire or pay up some more depending on how things are going then.

Well I just mean it will be down to us die-hards and cheapskates (I fit in both  Tongue) so we will probably only need one server then and we'd have to come up with a new set of people to chip in.

I would say Surf had it right. As ace as the game might be, it's already feeling as if the re-playability will be limited.

What places can get get a server hosted from aside from http://www.gameservers.com/game_servers/l4d_demo.php ?

The only decent looking place I saw was Nuclear Fallout, but their servers were $21.  I'm sure nothing is going to be cheaper than the gamerservers price for a private server, and that's what #1 on TF2 has been hosted on rite?  Which has generally been fine until these issues lately.  I don't know exactly what we have to do to pay for a server like that though.  Do we have to make some central paypal account or wat?

As for continued playability of the game, I think it'll be interesting to see what sort of support it sees in post-release content from both the community and Valve.

They have a clan pay system on gameservers so all we'd need is one person to pull the trigger and set it up.  Post here if you are going to do it though so that we don't have 5 new servers.  Also I don't know the contract but I'm sure its month to month so there is little risk: if all the people that promised cash don't cough up just cancel the server after the first month.  Although I doubt that will happen.

I'll set up one with Gameservers by this weekend. Personally I think if it's going to be a community server we're paying for it should be public, which is what I'll do. Smile

Although, I wonder how necessary it even is. I was able to host a game almost no problem last night (At least no problem on my end... shame I can't remember who I played with so I could ask them). Either tonight or tomorrow I'd be up for trying to host again, and maybe even an 8 player server. I'm quite certain that there are enough people with comparative or better setups than mine, so the hardware is there. Given how nicely integrated the "friends playing" bit is in the game, as well as how easy it is to invite friends into a game, do we even need a dedicated server? Maybe instead just promote the steam group and its voice chat for organizing games?

Not saying I don't think we shouldn't pay for a server, but I guess I'm still not certain we really need to.

I think a dedicated server is only useful for the random times people get on. With a dedicated I think it will be much easier to get a game going for people who aren't able to host. Although I think if we setup a usual time to play and get a few people to host then it will negate the need for our own dedicated server.

This, from everything I heard there is zero advantage of having a public server when you already have people to play with.  I mean expanding our community would be nice but would a pub server really do that?

Did you not even pay attention to the topic vote Scotty?  If we're gonna set one up it's going to be private, and it's way cheaper like that anyways.  And I think it would be great if we want to have a night to play Versus semi-competitively, but I know many of you have barely even touched that mode yet.  I'd probably give it til' the end of the month and see what we want to do with it.

I heard versus can be way more satisfying but its a bit bugged server side right now, so yea by the end of the month that should be ironed out as well.
