I've found you have to wait till you are going into the 4th act.  I did it going into the third act and there were no weapon spawns we could find.  Doing expert with an uzi sucks.

If anyone wants confirmation there is the thread.  Several people tested it and it's true.  Fire damage and bullet damage are indeed calculated separately.  So plan your tank killing strategies accordingly.

Not totally true.  If you make it to the end and die in the safe room, your weapon will still be on the floor when you start the next level (haven't tested this to see if it's 100%, but it swear it's happened).
