Lol noobs

Since I live in this awesome city that is Montreal, I got to go see some fuckawesome movies at the Fantasia festival!

I saw pretty nasty movies: The Woman; Don't be Afraid of the Dark (coming soon in theaters Aug. 26th lolowned) - very good movie by the way, go see it. I'll get to watch some movie version of the Phantom of the Opera with an orchestra tomorrow!

Rise of the Planet of the Apes was actually pretty darn good.

I though it was ok, but I was bit disappointed. I'm not sure if any of you have seen any of the Planet of the Apes movies from the 70's aside from the first, but they were often used to give perspective on social issues of the time without alienating the audience. Some of them were also used to explore the darker sides of humanity, again by shifting perspective. Now I'm not saying they were particularly good films, but I was kind of hoping for return to form in some ways. I also realize that Cold War Era style sci-fi isn't as popular these days, but I would have walked out of the theater grinning my ass off if they at least tried to give it a similar feeling. The few Ester eggs in reference to the original movie was a nice touch though.

That being said, I do think that shift in perspective did highlight something, although not necessarily a "dark" side of humanity. For me it was how cheesy Hollywood movies can be. The whole hold your comrade up while he slowly dies thing and a few other moments really highlighted the melodrama in scenes like that.

I have seen the original Planet of the Apes. And honestly, I know I liked it more than others. What I really like is how it gave everybody a clear motive of what they wanted and why, especially Caesar.
During his time at the primate shelter, it showed him how cruel humans can treat animals, despite being equal in some ways. It's not necessarily that he wanted to take over the world, it's because he viewed the cages as an allegory to slavery or racism. It was an uprising, hence "Rise of the Planet of the Apes".
Also, Shaun of the Dead was pretty good, even though Hot Fuzz is better.

JFK is the movie I've been waiting for Oliver Stone to deliver. After two rather-mediocre films, I FINALLY get one that interests me, shocks me, and actually makes me question myself once the credits start rolling. Excellent, excellent, excellent film.

Watched a movie called Stake Land.  It wasn't too bad.  Basically a serious post-apocalyptic vampire flick.  Like mixing Zombieland and The Road, but no humor, and putting in vampires and religious crazy folks.  Ending turned out abit hokey I thought.  Watchable, even though it felt like the action was almost played abit too serious. The vampire killing bordered abit on B-Movie I thought sometimes, though the rest of the movie plays out like a more serious drama.  Didn't know if it wanted to be one or the other I think lol

So in between rounds of Ponies, Dan Vs., and killing my mind with horrible movies on SYFY, I found that AMC is showing, among other movies I love/wanna see, MAD MAX 2; ROAD WARRIOR, so I'm watching that again.

Bram Stoker's Dracula is weeeeeeird. It's kind of got a lot of schlocky feel to it, but it has a meaty budget and good effects. Good cast too. Gary Oldman has a fantastic half-campy, half-serious performance, but the rest of the cast feels a bit underused. The running time was a little too long for me, but if you like Dracula movies you ought to give it a try.

Watched The Boondock Saints tonight.

Uh, yeah, THERE WAS A FIREFIGHTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT

Seriously though, fun film, nothing amazing, but I was entertained for the better part of two hours, which is all I ask of a movie.

GHOST RIDER: SPIRIT OF VENGEANCE Trailer

The first one blew, but this is apparently from the guys who did Crank, so it could be pretty crazy.  If they can combine Ghost Rider with Crank and some of the feel of Drive Angry, this could be a fun movie.  Too bad it won't be as hardcore as Drive Angry lol
