If only!  That would be at the top of a most wanted MMO list for me lol It's all fantasy and scifi for MMO's.  I think a post-apocalyptic based modern MMO would be pretty awesome.  Just have the zone suddenly increase and engulf a huge chunk of Europe and then set it 5 to 10 years after that.  Oh to dream...

That is not good news to hear...Should still be better than what FF14 turned out to be, so I doubt it'll be the biggest failure out there.

What I really wonder is....does anyone really know how to make a proper MMO?

There's a few stalwarts that stick around long past expiration dates for other games, but what happened to the dev teams that made them, surely there have to be a few creative minds out there that can pull it off....

I think any future MMO really needs the following....

- Factional Wars (Player Set or Set by Game)
- Engine Updates -> NO SEQUELS
- Engaging End Game, and expansion of the end game over time
- Minimal "Rebalancing" over time
- Some degree of real risk and loss
- As few "rules" as possible
[/quote]

EVE what?

Well more than just EvE had that...or at least planned to have that, including Planetside, WAR, WOW, Guild Wars, and Ultima all have something off that list to some degree.

I want to conduct surface bombing runs in EvE, with my Drake.

That has 4 RCU's and a single torp launcher. 8)

God I miss EvE...

<sigh>

In what other game can a single person play in such a manner that their little 14 char, single person corp, is blue and friendly to another corp like Goonswarm?

Anyone playing TOR? now that finals are over I'm getting into the pre-order early access (bought today got access today) - I'll update with what server I end up on if no one else is playing.  I played beta and loved it... the storylines are extremely fun imo and the group sequences are really fun.  combat is pretty typical MMO with the minor exception of guns and cover system... as expected.  I played smuggler to lvl 13 or so and it was quite fun... I'll probably roll another gun/cover based - probably bounty hunter to get a little variety in beginning story.

trust me... I'm a 2L

I'm mostly just waiting to hear on how the game is at launch and what peoples initial impressions are before I consider diving into it.  After Christmas I might get it, though it'll either be that or Rocksmith.  Haven't decided yet.

a group of us from my planetside outfit are playing this game and if you are a w.o.w fan than I think you'll like this game.    The story line is amazing and leaves with options to choose your fate as you level.    We are playing sith on a PVP server called Hedarr Soongh - East Coast - PVP.  Stop by and say Hi.

What if we aren't a WoW fan? lol I know it looks to play generally like WoW, but I was hoping it was gonna be more involving with the story aspect, cause really, WoW is an awful game. Unbeilevably repetitive, shitty missions, and the endgame turns into a repetitive grind (At least it did before Cataclysm that is).  I know endgame can't be commented on yet, but I'm still waiting to see what it does really good over other MMO's, though it did look to have a kinda entertaining way to do space battles with it's Star Fox like on rails battling.

I'd offer more practical insight, but I find you too much of a cynic, Maxon. You seem eager to sit on the fence after several posts to the contrary in this thread, and only come down to shit on everything said, rather than take it for what it is.

Buy it and make your own judgement, if you can't find merit in others perspectives.

Sure, I am being cynical about this.  I tend to be with MMO's after trying so many and just making sure I get the info I need, so that I'm not blowing money on another MMO that might not pull me in.  What I should've said was more specific, being that does the story make the missions better than the usual MMO ones that get pretty boring and repetitive.  It's nice if there's a good story to it, but if it isn't affecting the gameplay, is it just another regular MMO with some added story?  Kinda need alittle more than two small posts to help make up my mind.

From what I played during the weekend beta 2 weeks ago the MMO formula is the exact same of go here kill this x amount of times, I didn't play very far in as my computer ran the game like crap. If TOR was a Mass Effect MMO instead of a Star Wars one I would play the shit out of it and I think Mass Effect lends itself to the MMO style more than Star Wars.

I think what you're more looking for in an MMO is what Guild Wars 2 is trying to do. It is trying to break free of the standard MMO format, and change the genre. I had a whole paragraph typed up but apparently I accidentally deleted it and I am not typing that up again. Granted that has no release date other than Q2 2012, but closed beta is going on right now, and after that is probably a more open closed beta, or straight out open beta versus apply for closed beta, then open beta after that beta test is over.

I heard good things about the first GW, but just never jumped into it, so I'll keep an eye out for the second one whenever it comes out.  I personally love the idea of a Star Wars MMO, I mean I spent a few years in SWG till I gave up on it, so if it doesn't really play much differently than other MMO's out there other than having a really good story , I'll probably pass on it for now, unless I see something that can really draw me in for a long term go.  Right now, it just seems like little bits of it are interesting, but as a whole, it hasn't quite connected.

Well the Guild Wars trilogy will probably go on sale during this Christmas sale, so depending on how much off it is it might be a good idea to join in. I'm doing Hall of Monuments stuff so I'll do stuff with you if you do get it.
