Best Picture 2009 (oscars)

I voted for District 9, but completely forgot about Up.  Dug is my favorite movie character in a long damn time.

The best part of Up was the first half hour.  Just like Wall-E the year before.  So good that it doesn't even matter what the rest of the movie is like.

However the best movie last year was Black Dynamite.  Go find a way to see it, fucking amazing.

I think D9 should win though.  It was a really refreshing take on the genre, and despite the aliens looking gross/nasty as fuck, by the end of the movie I truely sympathiezed with them and could read the emotions in Christopher's face. I thought that was hella cool.

EDIT: I haven't seen up though, the premis of the movie never interested me.  Now that you all are saying it's so good I aught to see it some time, I love movies that pull my heartstrings and make me feel/think

Actually...I think Avatar and District 9 have very different stories, D9 is an allegory for apartied in South Africa and internal state sanctioned segregation, where as Avatar was more of an anti-colonial, anti-imperialist, anti-corporate message.

While some plot elements may be similar (cultural/racial/etc), I think D9 hits closer to home and does it with far less glitz and a lot more story telling.

I think your right. I don't think Avatar gets as heavy into the anti-corporatism as people think. I think both are more about how we would have trouble thinking of other species as people which would make it easier for us to make inhumane decisions related to them. The main difference between the two is that D9 has a pretty direct tie to actual real life racism where Avatar doesn't really have a clear message.

I'm a fan of Sci-Fi, so this was a swell year, though I haven't seen Moon yet which I hear is a dandy addition to the genre. Voted D9.

District 9 and Inglorious Basterds where the two best late summer flicks I've had the pleasure of seeing in a long time, I greatly enjoyed both.  As far as Oscar worthiness, I think D9 edges out Tarantino, academy doesn't seem too set on ever awarding him a best picture.

And Korjax, I think LoTR: RotK was the first fantasy/sci-fi movie to ever win an oscar for best picture, so go figure, pigs can fly after all.

The answer is either Up, Inglorious Bastards, The Hurt Locker, or Sherlock Holmes(If only because they finally portrayed Holmes and Watson the way they always should have been portrayed). Avatar should garner best CGI easily, but that's it. District 9, while an accomplishment considering the budget, had a laughable storyline with every character except for the main two being cardboard cutouts. Not to mention the science and political reaction to the aliens were laughable at best, but forced because they wanted to beat you about the head with the apartheid metaphor.

Sherlock Holmes was pretty awesome.  The whole time, I was like, "Jeez, this reminds me of a Guy Ritchie movie..." (in a good way).  Boom, credits roll, and it IS a Guy Ritchie movie.  I don't know how I didn't know that going in, but that was left completely absent (or at least covert) in any advertising I came across for it.  Nice mix of fantasy, adventure, comedy, and Ritchie's cigarette-smooth style.
